Report: South Florida Mayors to Fight in Charity MMA Bout

Two South Florida mayors plan to square off in a mixed martial arts bout to benefit charity, according to a report from the Miami Herald.

A fight date has not yet been set, but the bout will feature Mayor Carlos Hernandez of Hialeah, Fla., and Mayor Michael Pizzi of the neighboring Miami Lakes. The match is expected to take place this summer at Milander Auditorium in Hialeah, according to the report.

Pizzi, 50, will reportedly donate his fight purse toward his city’s youth center, which is expected to open by the end of the year.

“He will last 30 seconds,” Pizzi told the Miami Herald. “I will knock him out, but I am going to catch him and lay him on the ground so he doesn’t get too badly embarrassed in front of his colleagues. We’re going to have a weigh-in downstairs in the chambers and we’ll probably get into a fight at the weigh-in. This will be really great.”

Hernandez has not yet decided which group his fight purse will benefit, according to the report. The 52-year-old reportedly works out with his 13-year-old son, who studies Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

“I’m going to train as hard as it takes to beat Mayor Pizzi,” Hernandez laughed. “And that’s not a lot of training. I might have to pull back to make it a fair fight.”
