Report: South Carolina MMA Viewer Hospitalizes Cousin with Pocket Knife Wound

A South Carolina man reportedly hospitalized his cousin by cutting him with pocket knife after watching mixed martial arts on pay-per-view this past weekend.

According to a report filed by The State, a daily newspaper headquartered in Columbia, S.C., Jason Sparks, 37, has been charged with aggravated assault. Sparks had reportedly been watching MMA over the weekend when he allegedly engaged another viewer in a playful contest.

“Three individuals were watching MMA, at which point two men got into a play match,” Curtis Wilson, a spokesman for the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, stated in the report. “These individuals had been drinking prior to the incident.”

Sparks reportedly came out on the losing end of the bout, and his cousin then stepped in to prevent further friction between the men.

“The suspect then accused his cousin of going against his own family [and] pulled out a pocket knife with which he then cut the victim in the upper body,” Wilson stated in the report.

Sparks and his girlfriend then reportedly drove his bleeding cousin to Providence Hospital Northeast. En route, Sparks allegedly assaulted the victim again while in the vehicle. When Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the hospital, they arrested Sparks, according to the report.
