Recently dethroned Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante and surging prospect Ovince St. Preux will reportedly square off this summer.
According to a Wednesday report from MMAFighting.com, the bout is being targeted for an as-yet-unannounced July Strikeforce event. Officials from the promotion have yet to speak on the matchup or card, which is also rumored to host a welterweight scrap between former title challenger Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos and Team Quest representative Tarec Saffiedine.
A former linebacker at the University of Tennessee, St. Preux rides a seven-fight win streak into his showdown with “Feijao.” Holding a perfect 4-0 record inside the Strikeforce cage, “OSP” had an extremely active and successful 2010, fighting and winning six times on the year. Most recently, St. Preux earned a unanimous decision over Ron Humphrey at Strikeforce Challengers 13.
Cavalcante was last seen losing his Strikeforce 205-pound title to Dan Henderson in the main event of the promotion’s inaugural trip to Ohio in March. The Brazilian won the title last year, punishing then-champion Muhammed Lawal with punches and elbows to lift the coveted strap from around the waist of “King Mo.” Representing the Black House gym, Cavalcante has won six of his last eight bouts and holds a 3-2 record in Strikeforce competition.
