Report: Dominick Cruz to Defend 135-Pound Title Against Cody Garbrandt at UFC 207

Cody Garbrandt is getting his title shot at UFC 207.

According to a report on MMAFighting citing “multiple sources,” Garbrandt will be the next man to try and solve the riddle that is Dominick Cruz. The Ultimate Fighting Championship has not officially announced the bout, if that’s the case in the fight does become reality, UFC 207, which will take place on Dec. 30 in Las Vegas at T-Mobile Arena, will give the mammoth UFC 205 card in New York a run for its money.

Garbrandt burst into the UFC with his electric style and crushing knockout power. “No Love” has yet to lose a fight as a pro and out of his 10 wins, nine have been removed from consciousness. Only Henry Briones at UFC 189 was able to survive to see the final bell, but Garbrandt resumed his torrid pace by scoring three consecutive KOs, with the most recent coming at UFC 202 against Japanese veteran Takeya Mizugaki.

But laying out solid opposition. Taking on a fighter with the elite skillset and perplexing style of Cruz is another as “The Dominator” will easily be the most experienced and talented man young Garbrandt will have ever faced.

Even after struggling through a myriad of injuries, surgeries and recoveries, Crus has dominated everybody he’s faced. Cruz was the last-ever World Extreme Cagefighting bantamweight champion and when the promotion was folded into the UFC, he immediately became the UFC’s champ at 135. He never lost the title; he eventually had to relinquish the title due to injuries but regained it by edging T.J. Dillashaw via decision at UFC Fight Night 81. Cruz, who hasn’t tasted defeat since 2007, is aiming to make his second successful title defense during his most recent run as monarch at bantamweight.

UFC 207 will be headlined by the women’s bantamweight championship between reigning 135-pound queen Amanda Nunes and former titlist Ronda Rousey. Also slated for the marquee will be a heavyweight rematch between former champs Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum while former welterweight king Johny Hendricks will face Neil Magny.

The card’s initial prelims will be streamed live on UFC Fight Pass, followed by the rest of the preliminary card on Fox Sports 1. And per the norm, the meaty main card will be available live on pay-per-view.
