Ten days after their controversial meeting at UFC Fight Night 40, Rani Yahya and Johnny Bedford have a date for a rematch.
The bantamweights have verbally agreed to square off June 28 at UFC Fight Night “Swanson vs. Stephens,” the promotion Monday revealed. The event takes place at AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas, and is headlined by a featherweight tilt between Cub Swanson and Jeremy Stephens.
Yahya and Bedford’s April 11 bout in Abu Dhabi was ruled a no contest after only 39 seconds after the 135-pounders clashed heads while striking. Bedford, who remained standing while Yahya hit the ground, felt he deserved a win, leading to a heated post-fight encounter.
The rematch will mark Bedford’s second Octagon appearance of 2014, a first for the fighter who has managed only one bout per year since joining the UFC in 2011 after a stint on “The Ultimate Fighter.” The 31-year old had a three-fight winning streak snapped by Bryan Caraway in April 2013.
Yahya, 29, also saw a three-fight streak halted when he dropped a split decision to Tom Niinimaki at November’s “TUF 18” finale. The Brazilian WEC veteran has earned 15 of his 19 career victories by way of submission.
