Parsons was hit by a 2013 Range Rover on Sunday morning and was hospitalized after the accident. Parsons fell into a coma and had his lower right leg amputed before he passed away on May 4.
According to the statement, Wright was driving his mother’s vehicle
while his license was suspended. One witness told authorities that
he believed Wright was going between 100 and 120 miles per hour
when he hit Parsons.
“Wright never stopped,” the statement read. “Neither did his friends driving behind him in their Mercedes, which followed the Range Rover as it continued southbound. Meanwhile, DBPD Officer Derek Chahine, who had been nearby on a traffic stop, used a medical blanket from the trunk of his patrol car to apply pressure to Parson’s catastrophic leg injury until Delray Beach Fire Rescue arrived and transported Parsons to Delray Medical Center.”
Wright attempted to have the Range Rover repaired at a body shop but the owner refused, so he hid the vehicle at a storage facility. The SUV, which was missing the driver’s side mirror found at the scene of the accident, was recovered by investigators on Friday. An “anonymous tipster” gave authorities Wright’s name on Thursday.
“Wright, who arrived at the police department Saturday afternoon with his attorney, also faces charges of driving while license suspended as a habitual offender and tampering with evidence,” the DBPD statement read. “His criminal history includes arrests for DUI, disorderly intoxication, marijuana possession and assault on an officer or firefighter, among other charges.
“The crash investigation is ongoing. Witnesses told investigators that Wright was at Buddha Sky Bar on East Atlantic Avenue Saturday night with friends. If anyone has information about Wright’s whereabouts that night, please contact Officer Ron Brown or Sgt. Jeffrey Rasor at (561) 243-7800.”
Parsons, 25, was 2-1 in the Bellator cage and 11-2 as a professional overall. He was scheduled to face Adam Piccolotti at Bellator 154 on May 14 before the fatal accident.
