Nate Diaz, Jim Miller Hit Targets for UFC on Fox 3 Headliner

Most expect fireworks when Nate Diaz meets Jim Miller in the UFC on Fox 3 main event on Saturday at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J. First, they had to take care of one final order of business.

Diaz tipped the scales at 156 pounds for his showdown with Miller (156), the winner of which could emerge as the No. 1 contender for the UFC lightweight championship. The six other men booked for main card duty, including welterweight co-headliners Josh Koscheck (170.5) and Johny Hendricks (170.5), also met their contracted weight requirements at Friday’s official weigh-in.

A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Cesar Gracie, Diaz has posted consecutive wins since returning to 155 pounds after a brief tour at welterweight. “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 5 winner last appeared at UFC 141 in December, when he routed Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts standout Donald Cerrone and cruised to a unanimous decision at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The 27-year-old owns a 10-5 mark in the UFC, with signature wins over former Pride Fighting Championships lightweight titleholder Takanori Gomi and Imperial Athletics representative Melvin Guillard. Diaz has secured 10 of his 15 professional victories by submission.

Miller has delivered eight wins in his last nine outings. The 28-year-old AMA Fight Club ace last fought at UFC on FX 1 in January, when he submitted Guillard with a first-round rear-naked choke at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. Like Diaz, he holds the rank of black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, having landed more than half (12) of his 21 wins by submission. Miller owns an outstanding 10-2 record inside the Octagon. His only career defeats have come to the top three lightweights in the UFC: Frankie Edgar, Gray Maynard and reigning champion Benson Henderson.

UFC on Fox 3 “Diaz vs. Miller” -- which airs on Fox at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT -- will also feature a middleweight showcase pitting Brazilian leg lock specialist Rousimar Palhares (186) against Alan Belcher (186) and a heavyweight duel pairing Strikeforce veteran Lavar Johnson (253) with Pat Barry (244).

Three hours prior, Fuel TV will carry six undercard matches: Tony Ferguson (154.5) vs. Michael Johnson (156), John Dodson (126) vs. Timothy Elliott (125), John Hathaway (169) vs. Pascal Krauss (169), Louis Gaudinot (126) vs. John Lineker (*127), Danny Castillo (155) vs. John Cholish (155.5) and Dennis Bermudez (145.5) vs. Pablo Garza (145). The two remaining preliminary bouts will stream to the UFC’s Facebook page at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT, as Roland Delorme (135) locks horns with Nick Denis (135) and Mike Massenzio (184) collides with Karlos Vemola (185).
