Mitrione-Broughton, Thompson-De Fries Heavyweight Tilts Added to UFC on Fox 4

A new pair of heavyweight confrontations has been added to the UFC on Fox 4 bill, promotion officials announced Wednesday. Matt Mitrione will square off with Rob Broughton at the Aug. 4 event, while Oli Thompson takes on Philip De Fries.

UFC on Fox 4 takes place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and will likely be headlined by a middleweight confrontation between hard-hitting Brian Stann and former Bellator champion Hector Lombard.

The lone American heavyweight in the announced quartet of big men, Mitrione recently suffered the first loss of his pro career when he was outpointed by Cheick Kongo at UFC 137. “Meathead” has fought the entirety of his career in the UFC, debuting as a cast member of “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 10 and earning four knockouts in his first five outings.

Broughton recently suffered back-to-back losses for the first time in his career, falling to Travis Browne on Sept. 24 and De Fries six weeks later at UFC 138. Prior to those decision losses, “The Bear” rode a five-fight winning streak capped by his successful UFC debut against Vinicius Quieroz at UFC 120 in October 2010.

Like Broughton and De Fries, Thompson also hails from England. A noted strongman, Thompson earned the title of Britain’s Strongest Man in 2006 before making his MMA debut in 2009. The Brit had a five-fight winning streak snapped in his UFC debut in March, as he was knocked out by Shawn Jordan in a slugfest at UFC on FX 2.

De Fries was initially supposed to make his UFC debut against Thompson this past November at UFC 138 before the strongman withdrew from the contest due to injury. Instead, De Fries bested Broughton at the event, extending his career unbeaten streak to eight fights. That perfect record would be blemished in his next outing, however, as De Fries was knocked out by Stipe Miocic in just 43 seconds on Feb. 15.
