Max Holloway Issues Statement After Pulling Out of UFC 222 Main Event

Max Holloway has confirmed his withdrawal from UFC 222, and it appears that some type of leg injury is the cause of his injury woes.

“I asked the docs if we could cut off my leg then ask the commission if I could fight handicapped,” Holloway wrote on Twitter. “They told me at the end of the day it is what it is… Had dozens of family from Hawaii coming up for this one... I know it sucks but hang in there. We're going to reschedule ASAP.”

Holloway was supposed to lock horns with Frankie Edgar in the UFC 222 main event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on March 3. The featherweights were originally supposed to meet at UFC 218 in December, but Edgar had to withdraw from that bout due to injury.

The promotion has not made an announcement regarding the status of UFC 222. The Las Vegas-based organization is reportedly exploring other options for the card’s headliner.

The 26-year-old Holloway made his first title defense at UFC 218, scoring a third-round round technical knockout of Jose Aldo in a rematch. The Hawaiian has won 12 consecutive bouts in the Octagon since falling to Conor McGregor via decision at UFC Fight Night 26 on Aug. 17, 2013.
