Manny Pacquiao to Fight Jessie Vargas on Nov. 5 in Las Vegas

The greatest fighter to ever emerge from the Philippines will set aside his retirement plans and return to boxing at least once more. Manny Pacquiao has been rumored for weeks to be fighting in Las Vegas on Nov. 5 but it was just a matter of naming his opponent.

On Wednesday morning, “Pac-Man” officially revealed in a statement that Jessie Vargas will be the next man to stand opposite him inside the squared circle. There were reports that Pacquiao and his team were torn between Vargas and Terence Crawford as his opponent in the fall, but they settled on the former.

“Yes, the fight is on,” Pacquiao said in a statement. “I have agreed to a Nov. 5 fight with reigning WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas.”

Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs) captured the WBA super lightweight title in 2014 by edging Khabib Allakhverdiev via decision. He defended the belt twice by decisioning both Anton Novikov and Antonio DeMarco before losing it in a thrilling and highly controversial brawl with Timothy Bradley last June. The Las Vegan returned to the ring in March with a ninth-round stoppage of Sadam Ali and now sets his sights on by far the biggest fight of his career.

Pacquiao (58-6-2, 38 KOs) has taken on a who’s-who of his generation. Known for going toe-to-toe with virtually everybody he’s faced, the Filipino legend has scored huge knockouts against some of the best ever. He’s won world titles in eight different weight classes and after losing in lopsided fashion to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last May, Pacquiao returned to action and bested Bradley in their rubber match to capture the vacant WBO welterweight crown in April.

The fight will happen in Sin City, most likely at the Thomas and Mack Center, though that site has not been confirmed. HBO Pay-Per-View will televise the battle, which could possibly be Pacquiao’s last professional fight.
