The return of “The Dragon” is official.
Lyoto Machida and Derek Brunson will square off in the UFC Fight Night 119 main event, promotion officials recently announced. UFC Fight Night 119 takes place at Ibrapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo Brazil on Oct. 28 and also includes a light heavyweight tilt pitting Glover Teixeira against Misha Cirkunov. The card will be televised on Fox Sports 1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass.
A former light heavyweight champion and middleweight title challenger, Machida will return to the Octagon for the first time June 2015, when he suffered a third-round knockout loss to Yoel Romero at UFC Fight Night 70. Machida was scheduled to face Dan Henderson in the UFC on Fox 19 co-main event, but that bout was scratched after the Brazilian tested positive for the banned substance 7-keto-dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in an out of competition sample. As a result, Machida was handed an 18-month suspension by USADA, which will conclude in October.
Brunson, meanwhile, rebounded from back-to-back losses against Anderson Silva and Robert Whittaker to knockout Daniel Kelly in his most recent outing at UFC Fight Night 110 on June 10. Brunson is 8-3 during his Octagon tenure overall and owns victories over the likes of Uriah Hall, Sam Alvey, Lorenz Larkin and Chris Leben, to name a few.
