Lightweight Shane Roller Announces Retirement Following UFC on FX 5 Defeat
After a difficult run in the UFC, Shane Roller is apparently calling it a career.
The 33-year-old lightweight announced the decision on his Twitter account Monday, three days after he suffered a first-round submission loss to Jacob Volkmann at UFC on FX 5.
“Looks like I’m hanging up the gloves for good,” Roller wrote. “It was fun, but time to move on. [It sucks] that it ended like that. Now [starting] the next chapter.”
A three-time All-American wrestler at Oklahoma State University, Roller struggled to establish himself in the Octagon. After debuting with a second-round knockout of Thiago Tavares at UFC Live 3, the Team Takedown product would drop his next three contests. He rebounded to capture a unanimous decision against John Alessio in July before falling to Volkmann via neck crank in the opening round of their 155-pound clash on Friday.
Prior to his time in the UFC, Roller had a successful stint in World Extreme Cagefighting, posting a 6-2 record with notable triumphs over Danny Castillo, Anthony Njokuani and Jamie Varner.
