Koji Oishi KOs Honorio Banario in One FC 13 Rematch, Retains Featherweight Title

Koji Oishi proved he has staying power.

Oishi retained his One Fighting Championship featherweight crown, as he knocked out Honorio Banario in the third round of the One FC 13 “Moment of Truth” headliner on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines. Oishi (25-9-10, 2-0 One FC), who KO’d “The Rock” to win the 145-pound title in May, sealed the deal 1:43 into round three.

Banario (8-3, 2-3 One FC) enjoyed early success with his punching combinations. However, the seasoned Oishi was merely biding his time. The champion staggered Banario twice in the second round, foreshadowing what was to come. In the third, Oishi found yet another gear, moved forward, floored the challenger with a right hand and polished him off with follow-up blows.

In the co-main event, One FC bantamweight grand prix finalist Kevin Belingon bounced back beautifully from his May defeat to Masakatsu Ueda, as he knocked out previously unbeaten Spaniard David Aranda Santacana a little less than three minutes into their confrontation at 135 pounds. Santacana (9-1, 0-1 One FC) met his end 2:53 into round one, buried by a brutal left hook.

Belignon (12-3, 3-3 One FC) set the table for the finish with an exquisite spinning back kick to the body. During a subsequent exchange, the 26-year-old uncorked a left hook that brought Santacana’s promotional debut to a dramatic and decisive close, Belignon’s Filipino countrymen
erupting with approval.

Meanwhile, repeated takedowns and heavy ground-and-pound drove onetime Universal Reality Combat Championship titleholder Eduard Folayang to a one-sided unanimous verdict over Dutch journeyman Vincent Latoel in their bantamweight showcase.

Folayang (13-4, 3-2 One FC), who entered the cage on a two-fight losing streak, struck for takedowns in all three rounds and assaulted his overmatched adversary on the canvas. Latoel (14-4-2, 1-1 One FC) was never much of a factor in the fight. Folayang iced the victory with a strong third round, where he survived a flurry of desperate punches from the Golden Glory representative,
scored with another takedown and piled up the strikes on the ground.

Elsewhere, a damaging clinch game and effective counterstriking carried South African muay Thai stylist Vuyisile Colossa to perhaps the most significant victory of his career, as he took a unanimous decision from AMC Pankration’s Caros Fodor in a featured lightweight tilt.

Colossa (7-4, 3-1 One FC) did his best work in close quarters, where he attacked the Strikeforce and Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran with knees and elbows. Fodor (8-4, 1-1 One FC), who seemed to be a step behind his counterpart in the standup, answered with a pair of ill-advised guillotine choke attempts.

Both failed, allowing Colossa to rack up meaningful points in top position.

The loss was Fodor’s third in four appearances.

Finally, Lakay MMA flyweight Geje Eustaquio (5-2, 2-1 One FC) captured a unanimous verdict over Eugene Toquero (4-1, 0-1 One FC); unbeaten South Korean prospect Dae Hwan Kim (9-0-1, 1-0 One FC) submitted Thanh Vu (3-3, 1-2 One FC) with a rear-naked choke 4:10 into the second round of their bantamweight clash; Canadian import Paul Cheng (4-1, 1-0 One FC) struck Alain Ngalani (1-1, 1-1 One FC) into submission 4:54 into round one of their heavyweight scrap; former Shooto champion Koetsu Okazaki (9-3-1, 1-1 One FC) submitted Josh Alvarez (12-6, 0-1 One FC) with a rear-naked choke 3:13 into the second round of their battle at 135 pounds; Ruel Catalan (2-4, 1-0 One FC) put away Cambodian newcomer Khim Dima (0-1, 0-1 One FC) with punches 3:35 into round one of their flyweight battle; and Evolve MMA’s Herbert Burns (2-0, 2-0 One FC) submitted Edward Kelly (5-1, 0-1 One FC) with a rear-naked choke 44 seconds into the first round of their encounter at 145 pounds.
