Jones-Teixeira, Mir-Overeem Added to UFC 169 on Super Bowl Weekend in N.J.

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will officially defend his title against Glover Teixeira at the promotion’s annual Super Bowl weekend event this February.

Ultimate Fighting Championship officials announced the expected booking on Thursday night, also revealing that a planned UFC 167 heavyweight showdown between Frank Mir and Alistair Overeem has been shifted to UFC 169, which takes place at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

UFC President Dana White indicated last month that “Bones” would defend his title against Teixeira in his next outing rather than Alexander Gustafsson, whom Jones battled for 25 hard-fought minutes at UFC 165 before seeing his hand raised in a razor-close unanimous decision. Recognized by many as the sport’s top pound-for-pound talent, Jones has won his last 10 fights and owns notable wins over former champions Mauricio Rua, Quinton Jackson and Lyoto Machida.

Teixeira, meanwhile, last competed on Sept. 4, when he knocked out Ryan Bader in the main event of UFC Fight Night 28. The 33-year-old has not lost since March 2005 and rides a 20-fight winning streak into his UFC title opportunity.

A former UFC heavyweight champion, Mir has lost three straight fights after winning his previous three. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt has been bested twice this year, first falling to Daniel Cormier at UFC 164 before suffering a first-round technical knockout at the hands of Josh Barnett this past August.

Overeem rides back-to-back defeats into his clash with Mir, most recently suffering a first-round knockout at the hands of Hawaiian prospect Travis Browne at UFC Fight Night 26. Prior to that setback, the former Strikeforce champion was knocked out by Antonio Silva this past February at UFC 156.
