Jon Jones: Big Toe Recovery ‘Spot On’ After UFC 159 Injury

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is recovering as expected from his gruesome big toe injury.

“Loving my new heavy duty boot. Great news from the doctors today,” Jones tweeted on Tuesday. “The alignment of my bones [is] healing spot-on, and the skin [is] closing with no infections.”

While it is unknown when Jones will return to the cage, the champion will now resume plans to travel abroad. In addition to tweeting a picture of the medical boot he will wear during his recovery, Jones also shared a picture of his passport and his plans to visit Russia and Jamaica.

Jones injured his left big toe during his one-sided victory over Chael Sonnen last month at UFC 159. The wound, which was later diagnosed by the cage-side physician as an open fracture dislocation, was sustained during the bout’s opening round as Jones planted his foot on the canvas. The champion did not even notice the injury until his post-fight interview, during which commentator Joe Rogan pointed out the ghastly dislocation.

Sonnen offered little in the way of resistance for Jones that night, as the 25-year-old champion used his considerable size advantage to take Sonnen down multiple times and finish him with ground-and-pound. The victory marked Jones’ fifth consecutive light heavyweight title defense, bringing him even with Tito Ortiz in the record book.
