John Hathaway has withdrawn from his scheduled UFC 189 matchup with Gunnar Nelson as a result of an undisclosed injury.
A promotion official confirmed the news Tuesday following an initial report from MMAJunkie.com. The UFC is in the process of seeking a replacement opponent for Nelson. The welterweight scrap was slated for the pay-per-view portion of the July 11 card.
UFC 189 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and features a pair of title bouts, as Jose Aldo faces Conor McGregor in a 145-pound championship tilt, while Robbie Lawler defends his welterweight strap against Rory MacDonald.
Hathaway has competed infrequently in recent years. He last appeared at UFC Fight Night in March 2014, when he suffered a first-round knockout loss to Dong Hyun Kim. That was the 27-year-old Englishman’s first bout since a win over John Maguire on Sept. 29, 2012. Hathaway is 7-2 in the Las Vegas-based promotion overall, including victories against Rick Story and Diego Sanchez.
