Alexa Conners vs. Laura Howarth

Round 1

Howarth declines a touch of gloves at the start of the bout and begins backpedaling, throwing kicks at the body of her oncoming opponent. Conners absorbs a body kicks and a straight right hand as she tries to corner Howarth near the fence, with no success. Two minutes in, Conners finally catches Howarth near a post, but she only lands a few leg kicks before Howarth angles away. Both women begin to pick up the pace at the halfway mark, the southpaw Howarth landing her left hand on the end of a couple combinations, while Conners keeps applying pressure and peppering with strikes from range. The measured attacks from Conners look to be paying off as Howarth is showing wear inside the last 90 seconds of the round, trying to keep her footing as she moves around the edge of the cage. Howarth grabs for a takedown twice in the last 30 seconds, can’t get it but does manage to plant one more left hand on Conners’ face.

Round 2

Howarth took a split decision.
Howarth keeps her back away from the fence in the opening minute of round two, instead circling backward around the center of the cage, chopping at Conners’ legs with kicks from outside. Conners is trying to walk her down but can’t close the distance, and it looks like she’s getting frustrated as she takes a step back and beckons Howarth forward. Howarth keeps backing up, but soon Conners is able to maneuver her toward the fence. Conners starts to connet with a few punches, sending Howarth grabbing for a clinch or trip takedown. Conners shoves off, backs up Howarth to the wall again and sends a hard right hand down the middle. Howarth takes a kick to the body and grazes with a looping left hand, drawing a smile from Conners. Inside the last minute of the round, it’s Howarth moving around the outside, about a foot off the fence, and Conners following her from the center. Conners, now bleeding from the nose, is decking Howarth with good right hands as the round ends in a wild flurry. The bantamweights have some words for one another after the bell, too.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Conners
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Conners
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Conners

Round 3

Conners moves Howarth back toward the fence as the fighters settle into their familiar positions. Keeping her hands in Howarth’s face with pawing jabs and hard right straights, Conners seems content to eat the occassional left from the Englishwoman in order to maintain pressure. Howarth is bright red, breathing with her mouth wide open as she moves in short angles around the outside. Conners just keeps following, standing a foot in front of Howarth and flicking out punches with little concern. Howarth briefly comes out to the middle, but soon she’s forced back to the outside and slugged with a hard straight right to the gut. Howarth tries to clinch in the waning moments of the fight, maybe thinking last-second takedown, but the tie-up is as far as she gets.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Conners (30-27 Conners)

Ariel Beck vs. Rachael Ostovich

Round 1

Ostovich spends the first minute backing up and flicking out kicks at the taller southpaw Beck, who pumps her jab as she presses forward. Ostovich comes in to clinch and gets shoved against the fence by Beck, so the Hawaiian tries to drop levels for a takedown. Beck disengages and the flyweights are back to circling in the middle of the cage. Ostovich tries another clinch and this time succeeds in putting Beck’s back against a post, but Beck overhooks her arms and reverses the position, then disengages again. Beck lunges at Ostovich and socks her with a Superman punch, and Ostovich charges at her opponent with head lowered, looking for the takedown. Beck reverses again and finishes the frame pressing Ostovich against the fence.

Round 2

Ostovich overcame adversity to win.
Ostovich comes looking for the takedown early in round two, but when Beck stuffs a pair of attempts, Ostovich changes tactics. The Hawaiian drops to guard and attacks Beck’s right leg with a heel hook, but Beck stacks her up and lands some ground-and-pound to get out of the submission attempt. Now it’s Beck on top with Ostovich’s arm pinned down, but Ostovich rolls to her knees and scrambles to her feet with three minutes on the clock. Beck closes in on Ostovich near the wall and sends a left hand down the middle. Ostovich changes levels and drives forward, finally plowing Beck to the canvas near the center of the cage. Beck rolls to her knees and now must defend her back as Ostovich leaps on, trying to establish hooks. With one hook in and 90 seconds on the clock, Ostovich begins digging for a rear-naked choke. Beck buries her chin, shoving her face against the mat and not allowing Ostovich to get underneath her jaw. Inside the 30-second mark, Ostovich switches to an armbar, but Beck keeps her hands clasped and is saved by the bell.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Ostovich
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Ostovich
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Ostovich

Round 3

Beck begins scoring with hard punches about 30 seconds into the round, rocking Ostovich and forcing her to shoot for a desperation takedown. Beck fends off the shot and calls for the prone Ostovich to stand up, but in the process, it looks like Ostovich has enough time to shake the cobwebs. Ostovich flops to guard again a few seconds later, allowing Beck to stand over her and chop at her legs. Two minutes in, Ostovich scrambles back up, but she’s still kept on her back foot by the longer Beck. Another takedown goes for Ostovich, and something may have happened on the way down, as Beck’s nose is suddenly busted open and leaking blood when they hit the floor. Beck tries to sweep and escape to her feet but is caught in a guillotine in the process. Ostovich loses the choke and remains on the ground as Beck stands and kicks at her legs some more. Ostovich tries to get up and execute another last-second takedown but she’s stuffed as time runs out.

Shannon Sinn vs. Christine Stanley

Round 1

Stanley marches straight forward and slings big right hands at Sinn, eventually catching her with one on the ear. The shot gets Sinn’s attention and sends the Coloradoan shooting for a takedown, but she has to settle for a clinch. After being held on the wall for the better part of a minute, Stanley bursts out with another hard right hand that sends Sinn backpedaling. Sinn stifles Stanley’s offensive charge with a jab in the face; unfazed, Stanley keeps coming forward and throwing strikes in volume. Stanley exits a brief tie-up with a slashing elbow to the face. Sinn pushes her opponent back a few steps with a front kick to the chest. Stanley keeps walking forward with her hands outstretched, palms out, trying to get Sinn to bite on something, but she doesn’t seem to find the opportunity she’s looking for before time runs out.

Round 2

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

Stanley won a clear judges' decision.
Stanley bursts forward with a flurry of punches and a body kick for good measure, but her next attempt to charge Sinn is met with a jab to the grill. Nonetheless, it’s Stanley who continues to have the greater offensive output through the first two minutes of the frame. Sinn moves in small circles with her guard high, occassionally flicking out a jab or trying to clinch. Stanley digs into Sinn’s midsection with a left hand, but Sinn replies with a clinch and a good pair of knees to the body. Stanley lays a kick across Sinn’s midsection, but her punches are coming a bit slower now, her breathing looking a bit labored. If Stanley is fading, Sinn isn’t doing much to take advantage of it yet, as the Californian continues to dictate the pace down the stretch.

Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Stanley
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Stanley

Round 3

Sinn comes out the aggressor at the start of the final frame, though she’s mostly walking forward on Stanley while throwing the odd punch here and there. Stanley is letting Sinn throw while backpedaling with her hands high, a grin on her face as she deflects punches with her mitts. Sinn gets caught with a hard body kick and wants to clinch again. She holds Stanley on the wall for a few seconds with a waistlock, but Stanley circles away and keeps the taller woman at bay with high kicks. Stanley whiffs on a spinning back fist, sucks in a huge breath and sticks out her tongue at Sinn, who backs up as an overhand left bounces off her forehead. Sinn moves to clinch with under 30 seconds remaining, but Stanley slugs her way loose and finishes the round swinging wild punches.

Megan Anderson vs. Amanda Bell

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

Anderson finished at the bell.
Anderson goes straight after Bell, slugging the shorter woman with straight punches and then landing knees to the body when Bell tries to clinch. Bell gets spun around against the fence and hit with more punches, bloodying her nose. The next time Bell grabs hold of Anderson, the Australian tries to throw Bell to the ground, but Bell lands in the whizzer position and then transitions onto Anderson’s back. Bell fails to establish her hooks, allowing Anderson to twist around and take top position with more than three minutes remaining. Anderson drops short elbows through Bell’s open guard, postures up and switches to hammerfists, then has to slow down momentarily to fend off an armbar attempt. Once her limbs are clear, Anderson resumes dropping hard shots on Bell’s face, but now Bell is able to power back to her feet. Bell is clinging to a single-leg takedown attempt with 90 seconds remaining, while Anderson defends and lands punches with her back to the fence. Both women have expended a significant amount of energy, and they spend much of the final minute clinching on the cage. Anderson comes on strong in the last 20 seconds, assaulting Bell with heavy punches and two left high kicks. It looks as though Bell might survive, but the final head shot puts her on the floor and sends referee Herb Dean rushing in for the evening’s first stoppage.

The Official Result

Megan Anderson def. Amanda Bell via TKO (Head Kick and Punches) R1 5:00

Kaline Medeiros vs. Alline Serio

Round 1

Medeiros’ first body kick is caught by Serio, who can’t manage to convert it into any offense. After a minute of tentative striking, Medeiros shoots in low, lifts Serio over her shoulder and slams her to the floor at the base of the fence. Serio tries to post and stand, gets dragged back down, tries again and succeeds. Medeiros goes for another double-leg slam but has to abort the plan as Serio threatens with a guillotine. Instead, Medeiros keeps Serio pressed against the fence until she’s able to escape the headlock. The strawweights move back to the center of the cage, now midway through the opening round. Medeiros tries another takedown, gets denied but hits Serio with a knee to the body on her way out. Medeiros’ next takedown is successful, but again Serio is able to escape to her feet without sustaining much damage. Medeiros shoots, lifts and goes to slam Serio, but again Serio grabs a loose guillotine to prevent the forceful takedown. Medeiros traps Serio on the wall and closes out the round throwing short left hands.

Round 2

Medeiros teed off on Serio.
Medeiros ducks under a punch, gets hold of Serio’s legs and dumps her roughly to the canvas in the center of the cage. The blue-haired Brazilian scores with ground-and-pound from top position as she pins down Serio’s arms, but soon enough Serio is able to squirm loose and scramble up. Moments later, Medeiros lands another double-leg, this time near the fence; now she leans left to right across Serio’s body, facing backward in deep half guard. Medeiros has few offensive options from this position, so she decides to elbow Serio’s ribs. Medeiros twists around and begins landing clean right hands to the face of Serio, who is barely holding Medeiros’ right foot between her legs to prevent full mount. Medeiros has the dominant position and 90 seconds left as she continues to bash away at Serio’s face. Serio tries to cover up, but referee Mike Beltran is having a close look as the unanswered strikes continue to add up. Finally, Beltran has seen enough and steps in to rescue the trapped Serio from further punishment.

The Official Result

Kaline Medeiros def. Alline Serio via TKO (Punches) R2 4:04

Charmaine Tweet vs. Latoya Walker

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

Tweet iced walker with a gorgeous shot.
Walker comes out firing and puts a couple heavy right hands on the face of Tweet in the opening moments of the bout. Tweet responds with a knee to the stomach but is unable to find the clinch she’s awkwardly searching for with outstretched arms. Tweet tries a Thai clinch and gets caught with more punches before she’s able to hit the shorter Walker with any knees. Walker gets a rear waistlock and spins Tweet to the mat in the center of the cage. Tweet lands in a bad position but spins to reclaim full guard, and now Walker wants her back on her feet. Tweet eats two more right hands, lands a straight right on Walker and gets wrapped up again at the midway point of round one. Walker lands a few short punches before disengaging, and now Tweet comes away with a bloody nose. Tweet keeps her distance now, landing leg kicks and keeping Walker on the outside. Out of nowhere, Tweet whirls around with a spinning backfist that lands on the jaw and knocks Walker to her back. Tweet pounces with a few follow-up punches, forcing referee Herb Dean into action for the stoppage.

The Official Result

Charmaine Tweet def. Latoya Walker via TKO (Spinning Backfist and Punches) R1 3:41

Invicta Strawweight Title Fight:
Livia Renata Souza vs. Angela Hill

Round 1

Mike Beltran is the referee for the first of tonight’s two title bouts, this with Souza’s 115-pound belt up for grabs. The champion crouches low in the center of the cage while Hill moves nimbly around her, both women looking for openings in the first minute. Hill strikes first with a few jabs, sending Souza shooting for a takedown. Hill defends at first, but Souza switches to a body lock and soon drags the striker to the floor. Straight to side control goes Souza, leaning left to right across Hill’s body and looking to isolate the right arm. Hill reclaims half guard, then full guard, and now tries to kick away Souza and scramble back up. Souza catches a guillotine in the transition and pulls guard, but Hill is able to slip her head free and now it’s the American in top position. Souza throws up a body triangle from her back, so Hill breaks loose and stands, inviting the Brazilian to do the same. Hill stuffs Souza’s next takedown attempt but winds up on the ground anyway as Souza dive-bombs her legs. Souza goes for a heel hook, seems to lose it as she nearly has her back taken but then suddenly has Hill’s left leg again. Hill stays out of danger and keeps Souza on her back until the round comes to an end.

Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Souza
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Souza

Round 2

Souza ducks low and covers up to deflect Hill’s strikes in the first 30 seconds of the round, then changes levels and easily puts “Overkill” on her back again. Hill rolls to her knees and then slowly climbs back to her feet, where Souza attacks with a jump-guard guillotine. Souza thinks she has the choke and shakes from side to side as she hangs off of Hill, trying to squeeze it even tighter. Hill pops her head free, though, and Souza seems a bit stunned by the punches Hill lands in the transition. Back on their feet, Souza goes for another takedown but winds up pulling guard and eats more shots as she stands. Hill is finding her range now, keeping her hands in the champion’s face, and “Livinha” seems to be slowing down as she absorbs the shots. Hill scores with jabs and leg kicks in the last minute, while Souza lands the occasional right hand. Souza gets one last trip takedown in the final 10 seconds to finish the round on top.

Round 3

Hill took the title with a split decision.
Hill blocks a high kick and twice puts her left hand on Souza’s mouth, but Souza changes levels and charges forward to put the American on the mat once again. Evading a topside guillotine attempt, Hill puts Souza in closed guard and decks her with an elbow to the temple from underneath. Hill kicks her way free and scrambles back up, now with three minutes left in the round. It’s a contrast in styles on the feet, as Souza hunches over and plods forward with heavy feet, lobbing hard single punches over the top. Hill, conversely, stays light on her feet and bounces around the outside, working at a higher rate with jabs and kicks. Both women are landing, but neither with enough force to put the other down. Souza grabs for Hill’s legs but is easily denied inside the final minute. Hill sprawls on one more shot from the Brazilian and busts Souza down to the floor as the round concludes.

Round 4

Souza comes out slinging heavy leather, backing up Hill to the fence, but “Overkill” angles back out to the middle and slows the pace by sticking jabs on Souza’s face. A nice right hand to the gut causes Souza to stretch out her arms, telling Hill that it didn’t hurt. Hill has reverted to throwing more single punches now, but her head movement is giving her the advantage on the feet as Souza continues to throw big right hands. Souza snaps off a jab but eats two in return, then Hill comes over the top with a right. Two minutes left in the fourth, and the strawweights continue to spend this round duking it out on the feet. Hill’s jab has bloodied Souza’s nose, though it doesn’t seem to be affecting the champ too much. With one minute to go, Souza dives for a takedown but comes up empty. Hill goes back to jabbing and cracks Souza with a few good right hooks in the closing seconds.

Round 5

Hill is landing early in the final frame, keeping her right hand in Souza’s face and freezing the Brazilian’s offense through the first 60 seconds. Souza finally gets inside and drags Hill to the ground at the base of the fence, but once again, Hill is able to kick her away and escape to her feet. Souza lands a leg kick but whiffs badly as she swings tired punches at her backpedaling opponent. Hill is keeping up her head movement, ducking and slipping out of the way of Souza’s more telegraphed strikes. Souza nearly gets caught in the Thai clinch on one occasion but pulls back and escapes danger. The strawweights continue to slug it out with two minutes remaining, Souza pressuring now with leg kicks. They engage in a few close-quarters exchanges but neither woman is landing very cleanly in the pocket. Hill sticks to back foot and jabs at Souza, who steps inside and arm-drags Hill to the mat with 30 seconds remaining. Hill scrambles up but gets caught in a guillotine, and now Souza jumps guard to try and finish. Hill slips her head loose, so Souza switches to an armbar, but Hill clasps her hands and rides out the sub attempt to the final bell.

Invicta Bantamweight Title Fight:
Tonya Evinger vs. Colleen Schneider

Round 1

Herb Dean is the referee for this 135-pound championship bout, with Evinger defending the belt. Less than a minute into the bout, Schneider reaches out her left hand as Evinger steps in to throw a punch, and the champion gets a finger in her right eye. Evinger takes 40 seconds to clear her vision and the fight resumes with “Triple Threat” chasing after Schneider, chopping at the challenger’s legs with kicks. Evinger catches Schneider with a short left, lifts her up in a rear waistlock and dumps her to the ground near the fence. Evinger wants to finish this fast nd gets to work on a rear-naked choke, but Schneider defends well with Evinger hanging off her back. Evinger’s weight eventually forces Schneider to drop, and now Evinger looks to be transitioning to an armbar attempt. Schneider fends this off, too, so Evinger reestablishes her hooks and begins pounding on the sides of Schneider’s head with hard punches. Evinger is dominant from this position and she’s got 90 seconds left to work in the opening frame. Schneider takes a few elbows to the temple before she rolls to get her back on the canvas. Evinger is relentless, trying to trap Schneider’s arm and unleash more ground-and-pound, but the round ends there.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-8 Evinger
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-8 Evinger
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-8 Evinger

Round 2

Evinger begins round two walking forward with impunity, swinging freely on Schneider, who looks tentative on her back foot with hands low. Once they hit the fence, it’s a matter of seconds before Evinger plants Schneider on the ground and resumes her grinding attack. Schneider tries to kick free and escape, but Evinger is heavy on top. Finally, midway through the round, Schneider sweeps to top position and stands over Evinger, who seems content to take a short breather on the ground while Schneider circles above, looking for an angle. Schneider isn’t doing much but keeping Evinger on the ground, the bantamweights exchanging leg kicks as referee Dean seems close to standing them up. Evinger trips Schneider to the ground and scrambles up, then runs the “Thoroughbred” against the fence and changes levels for a late takedown. Evinger manages to pin down Schneider for the final 30 seconds of the round.

Round 3

Schneider is looking a little more confident on her feet as the third round begins, bouncing as she steps backward and stays out of range for Evinger to grab for a takedown. Evinger gets out of the way of a spinning back kick and continues pressing forward to sock Schneider with a quick right hand over the top, then one to the gut. Evinger tags Schneider with a left hook, dodges another flashy kick and lands a leg kick which causes Schneider to switch stances. Southpaw isn’t working for Schneider, who misses on a clumsy lead hook and gets rushed against the fence again to defend against another Evinger single-leg. Evinger spins to take the back but stalls out on Schneider’s right side, allowing Schneider to pepper the champion with short right hands in the last 30 seconds. Evinger finally whips Schneider to the ground with no shortage of anger just before time expires.

Round 4

Evinger begins the championship rounds by ducking under a spinning backfist and wrapping up Schneider for another clinch against the fence. The champ works for a trip takedown but it’s well defended by Schneider, who gets her back against the fence and widens her base as Evinger continues to stay in tight. Schneider tries to peel away Evinger’s hands and cannot, and finally Evinger pulls her to the floor in the center of the cage. Schneider stands up straight away, walks a few feet toward the fence and gets taken down again. Evinger absorbs a few elbows to the side of the head as she tries to flatten out Schneider, who rolls to her knees and gives up her back. Evinger jumps on and slides her left hook in before getting to work with left hands. Schneider is just covering up now, trapped in an awkward position as the final minute of the round ticks away. Evinger continues grinding away with short strikes and finishes the round on top.

Round 5

Evinger stalks Schneider around the outside of the cage until she’s close enough to deck with a long right hand. Schneider eats it and continues backpedaling away, switching stances and throwing sporadic strikes. Evinger is scoring with leg kicks, too, and the champ looks to be firmly in control of the action through the first half of the final frame. Schneider comes alive with a two-punch combination but gets slugged back with a straight right hand to the gut. Evinger lands a hard outside leg kick and then changes levels as Schneider barges forward, but Schneider sprawls against the fence and stays standing. Evinger won’t let go of Schneider’s legs and eventually succeeds in pulling her back to the mat with 60 seconds left to fight. Schneider sits out and may be thinking about a last-ditch guillotine attempt here, but Evinger is practically in side control now. Evinger ends the fight dropping punches on Schneider’s body and legs, and the champion should retain her title on the judges’ scorecards.
