Injured Champ Jose Aldo Withdraws from UFC 153 Main Event Against Frankie Edgar

The injury bug has bitten Jose Aldo once again, this time knocking the UFC featherweight champion out of a planned UFC 153 title defense against former lightweight titleholder Frankie Edgar.

UFC President Dana White announced the news Tuesday via Twitter, revealing that a foot injury has left the Brazilian unable to compete at the event, which takes place Oct. 13 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro.

The news comes on the heels of another setback for the event, as promotion officials announced earlier today that the evening’s co-main event between Quinton Jackson and Glover Teixeira had been canceled due to Jackson suffering an undisclosed injury.

Aldo, 26, has not competed since defending his title on Jan. 14 by knocking out Team Alpha Male standout Chad Mendes at UFC 142. “Scarface” was expected to return to the Octagon at UFC 149 to face Erik Koch, but Aldo was injured and the match was postponed to UFC 153. Koch was then sidelined and forced to withdraw from the Oct. 13 meeting, at which point the UFC filled the slot with Edgar.

It is currently unknown if Edgar will remain on the bill. The 30-year-old was set to drop to 145 pounds for the first time after dropping back-to-back 155-pound title bouts to Benson Henderson.
