The Ultimate Fighting Championship will debut on Fox Sports 1 as a part of the network’s Aug. 17 premiere.
Currently known as the Speed Channel, Fox Sports 1 (FS1) will be available in over 90 million homes, according to a press release obtained by Sherdog.com on Tuesday. MMAJunkie.com first reported news of the Aug. 17 event on Tuesday afternoon.
No bouts have yet been announced for the event currently titled UFC on FS1 1, but the show is expected to serve as the first of six planned live cards featured through the end of 2013, according to a Fox official, who told Sherdog that four of the events will be broadcast on Wednesday nights, while one overseas show is expected to air on a Friday evening.
A total of 12 events are slated to air on FS1 in 2014, with all the cards airing on Wednesday nights, according to Sherdog’s source. Four events are tentatively planned to air live next year on FS2, which is currently known as Fuel TV, though those shows are not yet confirmed. Fuel TV’s Tuesday night news program, “UFC Tonight,” will shift to Wednesday nights this summer on FS1. Additionally, Fox plans to air 14 preliminary cards prior to pay-per-view events through the end of 2014, according to the official release.
Earlier this year, the Fox Network announced plans to rebrand the Speed Channel and Fuel TV as Fox Sports 1 and 2, respectively, while removing all sports programming from FX. Fox, FX and Fuel TV have been the home of the UFC’s non pay-per-view content since the Las Vegas-based promotion signed a seven-year deal with Fox Networks in August 2011.
