Horwich, Villefort on Point for Shark Fights 14 Main Event

Matt Horwich and Danillo Villefort hit their middleweight marks on Thursday ahead of Friday’s Shark Fights 14 at Fair Park Coliseum in Lubbock, Texas. Both men weighed in at 185.6 pounds to make official the main event of the promotion’s first HDNet-televised card.

Horwich, 32, boasts a lengthy professional record of 26-17-1 -- which includes a whopping 20 submission victories -- and has never been knocked out. The onetime International Fight League middleweight champion has won two of his last three, scoring stoppages of fellow UFC veterans Thales Leites and Jake Rosholt in 2010.

Since his abrupt release from the UFC in August 2009 following a cut stoppage loss to Jesse Lennox, Villefort (pictured; file photo) has won three straight. His last outing came at Shark Fights 13 in September, when the Florida-based Brazilian earned a unanimous decision over former Strikeforce title contender Joey Villasenor. Earlier this week, word emerged that Villefort has left his longtime home at American Top Team, along with brother Yuri Villefort, Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante and Jorge Santiago.

Co-main eventers Tara LaRosa and Carina Damm hit the scales last, as it was announced late in the proceedings that Damm was still shedding weight. Approximately ten minutes after LaRosa weighed in at 125 pounds on the dot, Damm emerged and came in at 126.2 on her first attempt. After some discussion, the Brazilian “Barbie” disrobed and made the 126-pound limit.

Damm was not the only competitor forced to weigh in twice, as Lucas Lopes first tipped the scale at 176.3 pounds for his 175-pound catchweight contest with Mike Bronzoulis (174.2). Lopes’ second try saw him weigh 175.2; no announcement was made regarding the apparent 0.2-pound overage.

Rounding out the televised card are a bantamweight affair between Sean Shakour (136) and Joseph Sandoval (135), and two all-Texas welterweight contests pitting Amarillo-based fighters Eric Davila (170.8) and Gabriel Vasquez (169.2) against Houston’s Alex Cisne (169.8) and Border’s Layne Hernandez (170), respectively. The HDNet broadcast of the show begins Friday at 10 p.m. ET.
