Henderson Tops Strikeforce Salaries with $250K Payday

Newly crowned Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Dan Henderson earned an event-high $250,000 for his title-snatching stoppage of Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante ($28,000), according to numbers released Monday by the Ohio Athletic Commission.

Henderson was the top earner by a wide margin at Strikeforce “Feijao vs. Henderson,” which took place March 5 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The two-time U.S. Olympian in Greco-Roman wrestling took out Cavalcante 33 seconds into the third round with his trademark right hand.

The next best-paid athlete was Tim Kennedy, who pocketed $50,000 for his first-round rear-naked choking of Melvin Manhoef ($10,000). Neither Henderson nor Kennedy’s purse figures include win bonuses; undisclosed “locker room” bonuses which many promoters disburse are also not taken into account.

American Top Team lightweight Jorge Masvidal got the only reported win bonus of the main card, doubling his $15,000 “show” fee with his unanimous decision win against previously undefeated Billy Evangelista ($20,000).

Strikeforce women’s 135-pound champ Marloes Coenen took home $10,000 (no win bonus) in defending her title. The Dutchwoman submitted scrappy short-notice challenger Liz Carmouche ($5,000) with a triangle choke in the fourth round of their meeting.
