Gunshot Survivor Johnson, Others Added to March Strikeforce Challengers

Lavar Johnson will return to the cage against Lolohea Mahe in a featured heavyweight bout at Strikeforce Challengers on March 26 at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif.

Johnson was one of five people randomly shot by assailants on foot at an outdoor family reunion last July in Bakersfield, Calif. The 6-foot-2, 260-pound Johnson suffered wounds to his lower back, forearm and abdomen. Johnson told Sherdog.com in October that doctors worried if the fighter would survive the ordeal, let alone be able to fight again.

Johnson spent one month in the hospital and lost 60 pounds. Last month, a physician cleared the fighter to begin training again.

“My health is great and I'm almost back to where I was," said Johnson in a release.

The 32-year-old American Kickboxing Academy fighter will look to pick up where he left off in the cage, when he stopped Carl Seumanutafa with a one-punch effort in 18 seconds at the first-ever Strikeforce Challengers event last May. Opponent Mahe, hailing from the I & I Training Center in Maui, Hawaii, is undefeated in four of his five career bouts. Mahe drew with “Ultimate Fighter 10” alumnus Scott Junk at an X-1 event in February 2009.

Also on the March 26 card, returning Miesha Tate will face Zoila Frausto in a 135-pound women’s bout. Tate dropped a unanimous decision to title contender Sarah Kaufman last May, but rebounded with two victories outside the promotion. Fausto is undefeated in four career bouts, which includes a unanimous decision nod over Elisha Helsper at a Challengers event last November.

In another heavyweight bout, Ron "Abongo" Humphrey will meet George Bush III. Humphrey hasn’t competed since his second-round loss to Brett Rogers at a Strikeforce event last April. Bush also took a unanimous decision loss to former UFC Ricco Rodriguez in the Yamma promotion that same night.

AKA’s Justin Wilcox will also see action on the card when he faces Bakersfield’s Bryan Travers in a lightweight bout.
