Gennady Golovkin vs. Martin Murray

Round 1

Golovkin is very tentative coming out to the center of the ring, pawing with a range-finding jab. Murray is fighting out of a shell, throwing the occasional soft jab. Very little punches have been thrown midway through the frame and there are already a few boos from the crowd. Golovkin lands a meager left hook and then clinches. Murray clinches after blocking a vicious left hook on the inside. Golovkin lands a stinging right hand to the head and then a left to the body. Murray backs away in a defensive shell and seems unwilling to let his hands go.

Round 2

Golovkin poops out a few left jabs and then follows it up with a right to the head. Murray is back on his heels, flicking a jab to keep GGG away. Murray lands a right hand on the head, but Golovkin shakes it off. He lands another and then clinches when Golovkin gets inside. Referee Luis Pabon already warns Murray for excessive clinching midway through the frame. Golovkin opens up a little and lands a left and right to the dome. As expected, the Brit ties him up and then delivers a thudding right to the body. Murray lands another overhand right to the head and then thwarts Golovkin’s attacks. Golovkin cracks the taller fighter with right uppercut on the inside near the bell. Very close round but Murray gets it.

Round 3

Murray throws a jab and then digs to the body. Golovkin answers with a right hand, but Murray ties him up. Golovkin lands two left hooks to the body but misses the one to the head. Murray backs away, jabs, moves, and then jabs again. Golovkin is having a considerably harder time getting his punches off compared to the previous opponents. Golovkin misses a big right cross and then eats a right hand. Golovkin lands the next right cross, but Murray shakes it off and mouths something to him. Murray goes twice to the liver with the left hook. He pops off a jabs and then moves away. Left/right to the head rattles Murray very late. He stumbles away and GGG follows him, landing a sweeping left hand. Murray tries to fight back but the bell rings. Golovkin wins the round on that late flurry.

Round 4

Golovkin storms out of his corner and fires off a triple left jab, but Murray blocks them. Murray digs four hard uppercuts to the body but Pabon warns him for going low. Golovkin misses a monstrous left hook and stumbles forward, off balance. Murray can’t make him pay because he was too far away. Hard right to the gut by GGG. Midway through the stanza, the Brit digs a nasty left hook to the liver. Golovkin has two head shots blocked, but he rakes a right hook to the stomach. Murray backs away and then drops to a knee. He is grimacing as he gets up and is allowed to continue. Golovkin chases after him and swarms him. A flurry puts him down along the ropes. He’s up again with about 30 seconds left. Golovkin is all over him, looking for another knockout but Murray is saved by the bell.

Round 5

Golovkin pounces on Murray just as the round starts, but he misses most of his onslaught. Murray is on his bike, trying to jab to safety. Golovkin is stalking his prey, and nails him with an uppercut. Murray’s nose is bloody now and the end is likely near. Left uppercut on the way in by Golovkin, followed by a right to the body. Murray is game and fighting back, but he’s in way over his head. Nice left/right by Murray is flush on GGG’s face. Two left uppercuts by Golovkin and Murray’s left eye is a swollen mess. Golovkin digs some brutal lefts and rights to the body but misses a huge left to the head. Murray, bloody and busted up, survives the round.

Round 6

Murray is pinned along the ropes early and absorbs a big right hand to the head, but he takes it well and unloads a furious body assault. Still, Golovkin is all over him and throwing bombs from every angle. Golovkin regroups and goes back to the jab. Murray is still hanging in there, throwing jabs and right hands. Hard right hand midway through the round from GGG, which makes Murray back away and reset. Sweeping left hook by Gennady, but it’s more of the glancing variety. Golovkin goes back to the uppercut, landing four in a row. Murray pops him with a lead right but Golovkin walks right through it.

Round 7

Murray sticks his foe with a few stiff left jabs after tasting a right uppercut. The Brit continues to stick and move, momentarily nullifying Golovkin’s attacks. Golovkin gets inside and snaps his head back with another uppercut, but Murray takes it well. GGG goes forehead-to-forehead, eats a left uppercut and then throws a right. Murray backs away and jabs. During a clinch, Golovkin holds Murray’s head down with his left glove and punches him with his right, but Pabon apparently didn’t see it. Hard right hand by Murray. Another. Murray’s higher punch output keeps this round very close.

Round 8

Golovkin charges after him right away and traps him into the ropes, digging shots to the body and head. Murray escapes out the side door and jabs, but Golovkin stalks him down. Golovkin walks through Murray’s attacks, fearless of the consequences as he punches to the head and body. Hard overhand right by Golovkin midway through and Murray’s nose is bloodied again. Looping left hand sets up a big right uppercut for Golovkin, who follows it up with another left hand. Murray backs away and stumbles down, but Pabon rules it a slip. Brutal left hook to the body from GGG, who again appears moment away from ending this. Murray is very wobbly after swallowing consecutive left hooks. He is very shaky and exhausted on his way back to the corner.

Round 9

Murray’s corner is telling him that they are thinking about stopping it if things don’t change. Golovkin continues his dominance early in the ninth, trapping his foe into the ropes and nailing him a left to the body and right to the head. Murray is trying his best to stay afloat but he can’t hurt GGG at all. Nice left hook by Golovkin and then a left to the ribs. Murray answers with a left/right to the face. Four-punch combo by Murray doesn’t even budge Golovkin, who is relentless as he walks him down. Right hand makes Golovkin slip on the canvas and for a second, the Brit thinks he has him hurt. Golovkin goes right back after him and digs to the body.

Round 10

Golovkin slowly walks out to meet Murray and greets him with a jab to the mouth. Murray jabs and moves, but Golovkin tracks him down. Nice right/left by Murray, followed by a strong right to the body. Five-punch combo to the face by Murray, but GGG shrugs it off. Golovkin misses with a wild left hook. Golovkin pours on the pressure with 45 seconds left but he misses with two huge right and left hooks. Right hand to the top of the head drops Murray with about ten seconds left. He falls flat on his back and struggles up at the count of eight. The bell rings as soon as he’s up.

Round 11

Murray’s corner allows him to continue into the 11th, and much of the same early on: domination by Golovkin. Big right hand clean on the face by Golovkin followed by a short left hand. Murray sags down and Pabon immediately jumps in to stop the assault. Murray is a battered mess in the corner as Golovkin has just racked up his 19th consecutive knockout.
