Fujii Draws Schneider in Bellator Debut

The unbeaten Megumi Fujii, arguably the top female fighter in mixed martial arts, will make here Bellator Fighting Championships debut against Sarah Schneider at Bellator 21 this Thursday at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla.

Fujii has not competed on American soil in more than three years. The 36-year-old Japanese standout has already been booked for Bellator’s Season 3 women’s tournament, along with Rosi Sexton, Lisa Ward and Jessica Pene.

“Bellator is a great organization, and they have some excellent competition,” Fujii said in a release. “I’m looking to stick to my game plan, get submissions and win the tournament. That’s my only goal.”

Perfect through 19 professional appearances, Fujii last competed in November, when she submitted Tomomi Sunaba at Shooto “Revolutionary Exchanges 3.” She has secured 16 of her 19 career victories by submission and has 13 first-round finishes on her pristine resume. Fujii, a black belt in judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, has trained under Shooto veteran Hiroyuki Abe and former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett.

The 29-year-old Schneider owns victories against EliteXC veterans Julie Kedzie and Kaitlin Young, but, she has lost back-to-back bouts and four of her last five.

The 2010 Bellator lightweight tournament final, pairing Pat Curran with Toby Imada, will headline Bellator 21. The winner will earn a crack at the promotion’s lightweight champion, Eddie Alvarez.
