Frank Mir-Daniel Cormier Strikeforce Showdown Slated for Nov. 3 in Oklahoma City

Daniel Cormier’s upcoming Strikeforce clash with UFC heavyweight Frank Mir is expected to take place Nov. 3 at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City.

Mir was announced as Cormier’s opponent in July, but a date and location for the fight was not known until Monday, when USA Today first reported the news. No other bouts have been revealed for the event, which marks Strikeforce’s final heavyweight effort before the division is folded into the UFC. Showtime will broadcast the evening’s main card, while Showtime Extreme will handle the preliminary card just prior.

“Oklahoma, Texas, stand up. [I’m going to] need all my Cowboys and Sooners to pack the house on Nov. 3 when I fight Frank Mir,” Cormier wrote Monday on his Facebook page. “Let’s give him a good [old] Oklahoma welcome... then send him back to Vegas.”

A former NCAA Division I wrestling standout at Oklahoma State University, Cormier has yet to taste defeat as a mixed martial artist, going a perfect 7-0 inside the Strikeforce cage. The former two-time Olympian was called upon as an alternate in the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix last year and proceeded to win the tournament, besting Antonio Silva this past September and then Josh Barnett in May to claim the tournament crown.

Mir previously reigned as UFC champion before suffering serious injuries in a motorcycle accident in 2004. The heavyweight returned to the Octagon in 2006 and went on to claim the promotion’s interim championship by knocking out Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in 2008. Recently, Mir saw a three-fight winning streak snapped by reigning titlist Junior dos Santos, who finished Mir via technical knockout in the second round of their UFC 146 clash in May.
