Undercard Results

Welterweight prospect Ladarius Miller patiently picked apart Richard Colas, stopping him 58 seconds into the third round. Miller (2-0) scored his first career knockout when referee Kenny Bayless stopped the contest after Colas (1-3, 1 KO) wasn’t defending himself against an onslaught.

After a rather ho-hum opening round, local kid Lanell Bellows bloodied and floored opponent Thomas Gifford after a vicious three-punch combo. Once the Hot Springs, Ark., fighter hit the deck, referee Jay Nady waived it off, officially ending the duel at 1:17 of the second. With the win, Bellows improves to 7-1-1 (6) while Gifford drops to 2-2-1 (1).

Veteran welterweight contender Ashley Theopane was a beast inside the ring against Angino Perez en route to an emphatic stoppage. Though much shorter than the Miami-based fighter, the England transplant ripped Perez to the head with reckless abandonment whenever he could. Theopane, who now resides in Las Vegas, rocked his foe multiple times, scored a second round knockdown and eventually tore into the lanky Perez (15-5, 13 KOs) until Kenny Bayless finally stopped it. The official time of the TKO came at 2:44 of the fourth frame, allowing him to rise to 35-6-1 with 11 KOs.

2012 Olympian Anthony Ogogo remained unbeaten as a pro with a third round TKO over Jonuel Tapia. The middleweight took his time, but early in the third, he hurt Tapia and teed off on him. Referee Jay Nady had no choice but to step in, stopping the brawl 46 seconds into the third and rescuing the Bronx resident. With the win, Ogogo, who hails from Norfolk, England, improved to 6-0 with his third career knockout. Tapia fell to 8-5-1 with 5 KOs.

Romanian transplant Ronald Gavril systematically broke down Tyrell Hendrix with an array of punches to the head and body and stopped him in the fourth round. Gavril (9-0, 7 KOs) staggered Hendrix several times throughout the super middleweight contest and when the Los Angeles-based pugilist was trapped in a neutral corner and eating too many shots, referee Russell Mora stepped in. The official time of the TKO came at 1:58 of the fourth stanza. Hendrix dipped to 10-4-2 with 3 KOs.

In the final off-TV bout of the evening, local cruiserweight Andrew Tabiti remained unbeaten with a fourth round stoppage of John Shipman. Tabiti took a little longer than most expected in dishing out his power, but he still got the job done inside the allotted six rounds, keeping his record full of nothing but knockouts. The end came when Tabiti (6-0) rocked the Amarillo fighter with a counter left and then swarmed him in a neutral corner until referee Russell Mora stopped it. The official time came at 2:11 of the fourth, preventing Shipman (3-2, 2 KOs) from absorbing any more punishment.

Local contender J’Leon Love had a much more difficult time with Mexico City native Marco Periban than he would have liked. While Love enjoyed a speed advantage during their tussle, Periban’s relentless pressure and granite chin gave Love plenty of trouble in their super middleweight encounter.

Love tried to utilize his stiff left jab and deft footwork, but Periban fought a much longer fight and stuck him with his lead right repeatedly. Periban suffered a bloody nose early on and had a nasty gash open up above his left eye midway through the battle, but it never deterred him from trying to knock the American’s block off. The attacks of Periban certainly frustrated Love as the fight grew increasingly more uncomfortable as the rounds wore on, but Love never wilted.

Periban almost pulled off the upset in the fifth when a perfectly-time right hand buckled Love’s knees. In full retreat mode, Love tried clearing his head but the Mexican was all over him, winging shots to the head and body. Just as Love seemed to escape danger, another right hand crashed home, hurting him even more. Then, with about a minute left, Love was rocked far worse than he ever had been in his career and stumbled into the ropes. Periban swarmed him with a dizzying array of punches, causing Love to sag farther into the ropes.

Referee Jay Nady then swooped in to what appeared to be a stoppage, but he couldn’t pull Periban off of him; Love had clinched and was hanging on for dear life. Finally, after several seconds, the veteran third man got them apart, but did nothing -- no standing eight count, no fight stoppage. The lapse in judgment allowed Love to recover and snatched what might have been a stoppage win from Periban.

Still, Periban plugged away and scored a knockdown a few moments after the fight resumed, but Love’s head was already clearing up. Love bounced back in the sixth with stinging lefts and rights and never looked back. Periban pressed forward, but Love’s boxing skills took over and they carried him to a controversial unanimous decision. J’Leon was awarded the win with a verdict of 95-93, 97-92, 96-93, allowing him to remain unbeaten at 18-0 with 10 KOs. Periban fell to 20-2-1 with 13 KOs.
