Undercard

n a fight that was expected to be entertaining, if not memorable, junior welterweights John Molina Jr. and Humberto Soto tore into each other for ten full rounds, leaving everything in the ring. However thrilling the fight was, however, the indelible mark they left on the boxing world was one of dirtiness. Both men resorted to fouling throughout the bout, mostly via punches below the belt.

Molina was the more egregious of the two, having been warned several times by veteran referee Jay Nady and eventually having points deducted; once in the sixth and again in the seventh. But the Covina, CA fighter wasn’t the only one to blame for the continuous infractions as grizzled veteran Soto went south of the border several times himself. He, too, was penalized in the tenth launch uppercuts to the groin.

As the fight wore down, though, it was obvious that Soto was well ahead on points, prompting Molina to gun for the knockout. It never came due to the Los Mochis fighter’s sturdy chin. When it was all said and done, Soto was awarded the unanimous decision via tallies of 96-91 and 95-92. Sherdog also had it 95-92 for Soto, who improved to 65-8 with 35 KOs. Molina fell to 27-5 with 22 KOs.

Andrew Tabiti, a promising local cruiserweight, continued his unbeaten ways with a sixth round TKO of Caleb Grummet. Tabiti was patient in picking apart his opponent with a systematic body assault and sporadic shots upstairs. Finally, after the Michigan fighter began to crumble under the attrition, Tabiti picked up the pace and unloaded on Grummet (3-2, 3 KOs) until referee Vic Drakulich halted it. The official time of the stoppage came at the 2:01 mark, giving Tabiti (8-0) his eighth straight win by KO.

In a somewhat surprising turn of events, expected junior welterweight cannon fodder Armando Lopes put a beating on showcase fighter Damian Sosa, winning a unanimous six-round decision. Sosa, from Buenos Aires, had tremendous difficulty in dealing with the taller Lopes’ length and reach, was felled in the second, and never was able to climb out of the hole. In the end, Lopes, from Nogales, Mexico, won handily via tallies of 59-54, 58-55 and 57-56 to improve to 5-3 with 1 KO. Sosa dropped to 8-1 with 6 KOs.

Welterweight prospect Andres Maidana, the younger brother of Marcos Maidana, demonstrated that vaunted family power with a sensational knockout of Jared Teer in the opening frame of their scheduled four-rounder. Maidana dropped the Springfield, IL fighter with left hook and when Teer got to his feet, Maidana blitzed him with a barrage until Nady finally rescued him. The official time of the TKO came at the 2:07 mark, allowing the younger Maidana to bolster his pro ledger to 3-0 with 2 KOs. For his efforts, Teer dipped to 2-3.

In the opening bout of the afternoon, local super middleweight Kevin Newman fought hard against expected tomato can Azamat Umarzoda, but he was given more than he could handle and had to settle for a split draw. Newman (0-0-1) countered and defended well, but Umarzoda, from Dushanbe, Tajikistan, was extremely aggressive, offsetting each other’s scores. In the end, one judge had it 39-37 for Newman, another had the same score for Umarzoda (0-5-2), while the third official had it even at 38.

De La Rosa Scores Upset, Out-Slugs Angulo

Popular Mexican slugger Alfredo Angulo was expected by most to come into the ring and use fellow middleweight James De La Rosa as a drum. But as they say in boxing, not everything goes according to plan. De La Rosa, from San Benito, TX, used superb movement to befuddle “El PErro” throughout the contest as he peppered him with slick counters and stinging leads.

Angulo looked sluggish throughout the contest as he ate punches from all angles, all the while struggling to get his trademark power off. In the second, Angulo was cracked with a double left hook, a short combo that sent him sprawling into the ropes. Veteren ref Russell Mora correctly ruled him down and it was an uphill battle from there.

De la Rosa controlled virtually every aspect of the fight until the ninth when he got careless with his defense. A right hand buckled his knees, but Angulo (22-4, 18 KOs) couldn’t put his woozy foe away. A virtual carbon copy of events happened in the tenth and final frame, but De La Rosa, stumbling around the ring, survived the turmoil and won a lopsided unanimous decision. The official scores were 98-90, 96-92 and 99-89 for De La Rosa, who improved to 23-2 with 13 KOs after scoring the minor upset.

Bey Edges Vazquez in Controversial Decision, Takes IBF Lightweight Title

Miguel Vazquez was looking to defend his IBF lightweight title for the eighth time, but local contender Mickey Bey had other ideas. Though the majority of the still-filling MGM Grand Garden Arena disagreed with the verdict, Bey was the one who had his hand raised when it was over.

For much of the fight, Vazquez backed away and set traps to utilize his awkward defense and counters. Bey, not normally an aggressive fighter by any stretch of the imagination, seemed to have difficulty in landing enough clean shots to seize control of the fight, let alone win it. Still, Bey was effective in countering the defending champ’s own counters and two of the three ringside judges saw it in favor of him.

The fight itself was devoid of any genuine action, but it was about as close as they come. Neither man was ever hurt or in danger at any point in the duel, and since they were too tentative to slug it out, the crowd continuously booed them. In the end, though, two judges split the score between the two 115-113, but it was Robert Hoyle’s puzzling 119-109 score in favor of Bey that sent bemusement throughout the arena.

With the win, Bey not only improved to 21-1-1 with 10 KOs, he snatched Vazquez’ title in the process. For his efforts, Vazquez dipped to 34-4 with 13 KOs.

Santa Cruz KOs Roman in Second Round, Remains Unbeaten

Leo Santa Cruz will likely be a superstar in the sport of boxing in no time. His fan-friendly style of constantly coming at his opponents while throwing a hundred punches a round and never tiring is a treat to witness. If things continue in the direction he took on Saturday night in the co-featured bout of the Mayweather-Maidana event, he might be a star even sooner.

Santa Cruz retained his WBC bantamweight title with a sensational one-punch knockout of Manuel Roman in the second round, bolstering his pro ledger to 28-0-1 with 16 KOs. Cruz was his usual busy self in the opening frame, landing an array of punches to the body and head. But he turned up the heat just a notch in the second and unloaded his relatively hidden power to end the fight with a single blow.

As Roman, from Tijuana, backed away toward a neutral corner, Santa Cruz nailed him with a perfect straight right hand that landed on the corner of his jaw. The punch immediately dropped Roman onto his side and when he rolled onto his back, it was evident that he was in horrendous shape. Roman struggled onto his knees and then to his feet; once he finally stood up, veteran referee Robert Byrd had already reached the count of ten, ending the fight. The official time of the knockout came just 55 seconds into the second, giving Santa Cruz another highlight to his always-blossoming reel. Roman, a heavy underdog coming in, fell to 17-3-3 with 6 KOs.
