Floyd Mayweather Jr. Beats Jon Jones, Anderson Silva to Claim ‘Best Fighter’ ESPY

Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. won this year’s “Best Fighter” ESPY on Wednesday night, topping both Anderson Silva and Jon Jones at ESPN’s annual award show.

The result marks Mayweather’s fifth victory in the category, which was changed from “Best Boxer” in 2007. A mixed martial artist has never won the award, though Silva, Jones, Georges St. Pierre, Lyoto Machida, Quinton Jackson and Randy Couture have all been nominated in the past.

The proceedings marked the 21st iteration of the ESPYs and took place at Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. The event was hosted by “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm and saw athletes honored for their accomplishments in the past year as decided by an ESPN.com fan vote.

Mayweather, 36, served a jail term for domestic abuse in 2012 and returned to the ring this past May, defeating Robert Guerrero by unanimous decision to retain his WBC welterweight title. “Money” has never been defeated as a professional, posting 44 consecutive victories and winning slew of world titles in his 17 years of competition. Mayweather will next compete on Sept. 14, when he takes on unbeaten 23-year-old Saul Alvarez.
