Ex-WEC Champ Brown Faces Phan at UFC 133 in Philadelphia

Former World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight titleholder Mike Thomas Brown will square off with “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 12 semifinalist Nam Phan in a 145-pound affair at UFC 133.

The UFC announced the matchup Wednesday on its official website, with UFC President Dana White stating that Brown and Phan (Pictured) have “both verbally agreed to fight Aug. 6 in Philadelphia.”

UFC 133 takes place at Wells Fargo Center in the City of Brotherly Love and features a pair of high-profile light heavyweight matchups: former 205-pound champion Rashad Evans will face unbeaten wrestling convert Phil Davis, while onetime 185-pound ruler Rich Franklin meets Brazilian vet Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Though not confirmed by the promotion, a featherweight title bout between champion Jose Aldo and top contender Chad Mendes is also reportedly in the works.

Brown, 35, returns from January hand surgery in desperate need of a win, having dropped back-to-back bouts already in 2011. The American Top Team fighter made his first UFC appearance in nearly seven years on Jan. 1, dropping a split decision to hot prospect Diego Nunes. Brown returned to the cage just three weeks later, only to be outpointed again by Nunes’ countryman, Rani Yahya. Since having his WEC title taken by Aldo in 2009, Brown has gone 2-3, with wins against Cole Province and Anthony Morrison.

Phan, meanwhile, has not competed since his December UFC debut, which saw the Californian lose a contentious split decision to Leonard Garcia at the “TUF 12” finale. A veteran of Strikeforce and Sengoku competition, Phan is 2-4 in his last six professional outings, but did reach the semifinals of “TUF 12” before being eliminated by eventual runner-up Michael Johnson. The 28-year-old’s record stands at 16-8 with 12 wins by way of knockout or submission.
