Duquesnoy Flattens Walsh at BAMMA 25, Adds Bantamweight Crown to Collection

Tom Duquesnoy is now a British Association of Mixed Martial Arts two-division champion, as he knocked out Shay Walsh in the first round to capture bantamweight gold in the BAMMA 25 headliner on Saturday.

Duquesnoy wasted little time in dispatching his adversary. The two combatants immediately engaged in a wild exchange of blows, but neither seized full control of the chaos right off the bat. That was until Duquesnoy dug the sort of left hook to the body that would have earned Julio Cesar Chavez’s approval and then followed it up with a pipe bomb of a right elbow to the jaw. Once the blow connected, Walsh’s circuits were immediately scrambled, forcing him to nosedive onto the mat. The brutal knockout elicited a roar from the sellout crowd at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham, England, and will assuredly be a candidate for “Knockout of the Year.”

Veteran referee Marc Goddard waved the fight off as Duquesnoy calmly strode away from his fallen opponent just 75 seconds it all started. The 135-pound belt will be added to the Frenchman’s BAMMA featherweight title, making “The Fire Kid” the rare MMA dual weight class champ.

In the co-main event, lightweight champ Martin Stapleton went to war with Damien Lapilus, with both men giving as much as they took. But just as the fight was picking up steam, everything ended just 38 ticks into the second when Lapilus landed an illegal knee to a grounded Stapleton. Though both fighters wanted to continue, officials acted on the advice of the cageside doctor to stop the fight, thus disqualifying Lapilus in the process and allowing the SBG Manchester-trained Stapleton to retain his title.

Elsewhere, BAMMA heavyweight king Mark Godbeer retained his title as well by taking out Stuart Austin via punches in the second frame. The duel was competitive from the opening bell, but the husky “Hand of” Godbeer was too powerful and eventually his striking prowess paved a path toward victory, which came at 1:24 of the round.

Walter Gahadza was raked by a series of illegal downward elbows from fellow welterweight Colin Fletcher almost as soon as the fight started and was awarded the win via disqualification. The end came just 16 seconds after the opening bell.

Lightweight Marc Diakiese showed some heavyweight power as he knocked Kane Mousah into orbit with a single punch. The Englishman connected with a brutal shot just 36 seconds into their match, abruptly ending the fistic festivities while many spectators were still taking their seats.
