UFC 178 has a co-headliner, but it isn’t Donald Cerrone vs. Eddie Alvarez.
Instead, “Cowboy” will take on Bobby Green in a lightweight bout in Las Vegas on Sept. 27. The UFC officially announced the matchup on Thursday. Originally, a bout between Cerrone and Alvarez was targeted for the event, but that matchup hinged on the UFC acquiring Alvarez’s services from Bellator.

UFC 178 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and is headlined by a flyweight title tilt between Demetrious Johnson and Chris Cariaso. The card was originally scheduled to feature a light heavyweight championship bout between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, but that fight was postponed when Jones injured his knee in training.
Before Alvarez, Cerrone’s first targeted foe for UFC 178 was Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, that fight was scrapped shortly after it was finalized when Nurmagomedov injured his knee. The Jackson-Wink MMA product has won four straight fights in the UFC, most recently knocking out Jim Miller in the second round on July 16.
Green, meanwhile, has won eight straight fights, including four inside the Octagon. In his last outing, “King” captured a split verdict over Josh Thomson at UFC on Fox 12.
