Doctor: Judging By His Training, Anderson Silva Will Be 100 Percent Again Soon

. | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com

Sherdog.com recently caught up with Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission medical director Dr. Marcio Tannure, who also works with Rio de Janeiro-based soccer team Clube de Regatas de Flamengo.

During a brief interview, Tannure discussed Anderson Silva, Vitor Belfort, Ronaldo Souza and the recent medical suspensions handed down following UFC Fight Night "Bigfoot vs. Arlovski 2" in Brasilia on Sept. 13.

Sherdog: How do you share your time between UFC and Flamengo?
Tannure: Actually, I´m very fortunate to work with my two great passions: Soccer and MMA. I live according to the UFC and Flamengo calendar. I normally travel with the Flamengo team all over Brazil, and I have to be here for UFC events in Brazil.

Sherdog: Regarding UFC Fight Night in Brasilia, everybody got really worried about Igor Araujo following his knockout loss against George Sullivan. He appeared to be unconcious for several minutes. What happened to him?
Tannure: We did all the exams right after the event that proved that he didnt have any damage. What happened was a concussion. He left the hopsital in the same night.

Sherdog: Why did Andrei Arlovski receive a 180-day suspension after his fight with Antonio Silva?
Tannure: Actually, we had a suspicion that he had a fracture in his hand. Once he didnt want to get X-rayed in Brazil -- he decided to do that at home -- we gave him a 180-day suspension until he presents the doctor clearance authorizing him to fight. If he doesn’t do that, he is atutomatically suspended for 180 days.

Sherdog: Ronaldo Souza also had a hand injury after fighting Gegard Mousasi. Have you seen him since the fight?
Tannure: No. I saw him before the fight in Jaraguá [against Cris Camozzi] when he was bothered by an old problem in the elbow that comes from jiu-jitsu training. I was really impressed with how much of a warrior he was during all these years, because he kept training. After the fight against Camozzi, he had surgery, and we removed many big bone fragments from his elbow. He already fought Carmont and Okami in perfect condition. Now he has some problems with his hand. I did not see him yet, but based on our conversation, I believe it wasn’t anything serious.

Sherdog: How is Anderson Silva doing now?
Tannure: Anderson is in good condition. Actually, Anderson is a personal friend of mine. I was with him when he got hurt in the fight against Weidman, and I followed him through his impressive recovery. Obviously, a fracture like that brings a psychological problem, and only a training routine will make him comfortable again. But he is an amazing athlete and by the way he is training, I believe soon he will be 100 percent again.

Sherdog: You also worked with Vitor Belfort. Now he is out of Brazil. Do you still keep in touch? What can we expect from him without TRT?
Tannure: I´m not in touch frequently with Belfort right now. We talk sometimes, but Vitor, among the fighters I´ve worked with, is one of the most dedicated. His level of training is above the average. Of course, he must have felt the lack of TRT treatment, but considering his lifetime of training and all his dedication, I think he will reach this fight [against Weidman] in great shape.
