Diaz-McGregor Rematch Official for UFC 200; Aldo vs. Edgar Set for Interim FW Title

As expected, Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor will have their rematch in the UFC 200 headliner.

The main event was confirmed on Wednesday during an episode of “UFC Tonight.” The bout will be contested at welterweight, not lightweight, because McGregor is reportedly “obsessed” with defeating Diaz at 170 pounds.

Diaz replaced Rafael dos Anjos on short notice and submitted McGregor via rear-naked choke 4:12 into the second round of their headlining bout at UFC 196 on March 5. McGregor appeared to win the first round, but was rocked during an exchange in the second stanza to set up the fight-ending maneuver.

With McGregor occupied for the foreseeable future, the Las Vegas-based promotion has also booked an interim featherweight title showdown between Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar for UFC 200. McGregor knocked out Aldo in 13 seconds at UFC 194 this past December to end the Brazilian’s lengthy reign atop the 145-pound division.

That reign included a five-round verdict over Edgar in the UFC 156 main event in February 2013. Since then, “The Answer” has racked up featherweight triumphs over Chad Mendes, Urijah Faber, Cub Swanson, B.J. Penn and Charles Oliveira.

UFC 200 takes place at the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on July 9 and airs on pay-per-view. The card is expected to feature multiple title fights that will be announced in the weeks to come.

In the meantime, five other bouts for the event were confirmed on UFC Tonight: Cain Velasquez vs. Travis Browne at heavyweight; Johny Hendricks vs. Kelvin Gastelum at welterweight; Derek Brunson vs. Gegard Mousasi at middleweight; Joe Lauzon vs. Diego Sanchez at lightweight and Jim Miller vs. Takanori Gomi at lightweight.
