Davis Released by UFC Following Loss to Stephens

Marcus Davis | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com

After 15 appearances in the Octagon, Marcus Davis has been released by the UFC.

Sherdog.com confirmed Davis’ departure from the promotion with the fighter on Thursday. The news was initially reported by MMA Junkie.

“The Irish Hand Grenade” has become one of the promotion’s most familiar faces, as the 37-year-old made his name known on the second season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” After losing to fellow cast member Joe Stevenson on the show, Davis made his official UFC debut in 2005 at the season’s finale, losing to Melvin Guillard after sustaining a cut.

After several fights away from the big show, Davis would return to the Octagon in 2006, submitting Forrest Petz by guillotine at “The Final Chapter.” The Maine native would win six straight before falling to Mike Swick at UFC 85 in London.

Davis has lost four of his last five fights and was most recently on the business end of a murderous right hand from Jeremy Stephens at UFC 125 on New Year’s Day. Fighting at lightweight after a lengthy campaign at 170 pounds, Davis looked sharp for two rounds. Time was not on his side, however, as Stephens came out aggressive in the third and managed to find Davis' chin with a hard overhand right that relieved Davis of his consciousness.
