Daniel Cormier has been fined $9,000 by the Nevada Athletic Commission for his UFC 178 media day skirmish with Jon Jones on Aug. 4.

The light heavyweight No. 1 contender must also perform 20 hours of community service in San Jose, Calif. Both rulings were unanimously approved during an NAC meeting on Tuesday. Immediately prior, Jones appeared before the commission and was fined $50,000 and assigned 40 hours community service for his role in the brawl.

Like Jones, Cormier’s fine constitutes 10 percent of his base salary; Jones was to earn $450,000 for their bout at UFC 178, while Cormier would take home $90,000. Cormier’s community service requirements were less substantial than Jones, because, according to commissioner Pat Lundvall, there was a “disparity in culpability.”

“I don’t think he’s at the same level as Mr. Jones, but I don’t think he is completely without fault,” Ludvall said.

Cormier’s proposed showdown with Jones at UFC 178 was postponed when the champion injured his knee in training and had to undergo surgery. The two light heavyweights will now square off in the main event of UFC 182 on Jan. 3.
