Dana White Says UFC ‘Working on Interesting Stuff’ for Stipe Miocic, Hints at Cormier Bout

Stipe Miocic’s next heavyweight title defense could potentially generate more buzz than even his heavily-hyped UFC 220 showdown against Francis Ngannou last weekend.

“We’re working on some interesting stuff,” UFC President Dana White told TMZ Sports. “We’re talking about something fun right now. We’ll see if we can get it done.”

Miocic earned a clear-cut five-round verdict over Ngannou in last week’s headliner at the TD Garden in Boston, giving him three successful championship defenses – more than any other heavyweight titlist in promotion history. On the undercard, Daniel Cormier retained his light heavyweight crown with a second-round stoppage of Volkan Oezdemir.

Before he moved to 205 pounds in 2014, Cormier was a top contender at heavyweight. He bested Josh Barnett to win the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix in May 2012 and began his UFC tenure with decision triumphs over Frank Mir and Roy Nelson.

While White didn’t necessarily give anything away, he all but admitted that “DC” is the next targeted opponent for Miocic.

“Could be Cormier,” White said with a smile.

Cormier recently claimed he was no longer looking to return to heavyweight after initially expressing interest in facing the Miocic-Ngannou winner. Additionally, a move up could conflict with American Kickboxing Academy teammate Cain Velasquez, who is reportedly closer to making a UFC return.

“Do you see these guys? Do you see these dudes? I read that stuff and I don’t know what I was thinking back then,” Cormier said at a pre-fight press conference to promote UFC 220. “So no, I’m not gonna fight Stipe Miocic. I’m definitely not gonna fight Francis Ngannou. I’m good.”

However, a showdown between Cormier and Miocic could potentially attract a lot of eyes to a big UFC pay-per-view, and would get plenty of love from fans.

“I love [the Miocic vs. Cormer fight] too,’ White admitted.
