Dana White Confident UFC Will Get Deal Done with Eddie Alvarez for Potential Dustin Poirier Bout

Eddie Alvarez hasn’t exactly seemed content with the UFC lately, but Dana White believes the fighter and promotion will eventually come to terms on a new contract.

Following a report that the promotion was hoping to book Alvarez in a rematch against Dustin Poirier at UFC on Fox 30 in Calgary on July 28, the former Bellator champion vehemently denied that any progress was being made toward such a bout.

“It’s not f---ing happening,” Alvarez told MMAFighting.com. “I’m not fighting until I get a new deal.”

Alvarez reportedly has one fight left on his current UFC deal, but his stance came as a surprise to the UFC president. Things seem to have been smoothed over following a meeting between White and Alvarez in Philadelphia.

“His manager literally told us that he wanted to fight his contract out and check around, see how much he can get,” White said on the ”UFC Unfiltered” podcast. “I said, ‘You guys said you wanted to fight your contract out, now I see you’ve said that you’re not fighting without a new contract.’ Those type of situations are always better when you sit down face to face.

We got together that morning in Philly, talked some s--t about the Celtics and the 76ers. We talked and it was a great meeting. I feel like it was a really good meeting. I have a real good feeling we’ll get something done with Eddie and get this fight with him and Poirier going.”

White confirmed that the plan is to book the rematch between Alvarez and Poirier for UFC on Fox 30. Their first meeting at UFC 211 was an entertaining back-and-forth affair that ended 4:11 into the second round when Alvarez landed a series of illegal knees to his opponent. The bout was declared a no contest when Poirier was unable to continue.

The fight would be a significant addition to a card that already includes a featherweight showdown between Jose Aldo and Jeremy Stephens and a strawweight tilt pitting Joanna Jedrzejczyk against Tecia Torres.

“My birthday is July 28. July 28 we’re going back to Calgary. We have a long history and a debt to pay to the city of Calgary” White said. “I’m building like the baddest birthday card ever.”
