Cub Swanson on Jose Aldo Rematch: ‘I Want to be the Guy to Dethrone the Legend’

Cub Swanson prefers a rematch with Jose Aldo over a second shot at Chad Mendes. | Jeff Sherwood/Sherdog.com

Cub Swanson was victorious against Jeremy Stephens in his return to the Octagon at UFC Fight Night “Swanson vs. Stephens,” but wasted little time making clear what’s next on his agenda.

During an interview on Fox Sports 1, Swanson was asked about whom he’d prefer fighting if UFC officials deemed him next in line for the featherweight title.

"Of course I want to fight [Jose] Aldo, that's like [Chris] Weidman beating [Anderson] Silva you know,” Swanson said. “I want to be the guy to dethrone the legend. But fighting for gold is fighting for gold."

With Jose Aldo set to defend his belt against Chad Mendes at UFC 176 in Los Angeles, the title picture remains a bit unclear. But with two of Swanson’s five professional losses coming against both men fighting on Aug. 2, rectifying defeats against either remains a driving force in Killercub’s pursuit of the title.

Currently riding a six-fight win streak, Swanson seems poised for a run at the 145-pound crown. After putting in 25 hard fought minutes against a contender like “Lil’ Heathen” on Saturday, you can most assuredly bank on Swanson lasting longer than eight seconds if a rematch with Aldo comes to fruition.
