McGregor will put his featherweight championship on the shelf and move up to 155 pounds to challenge Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight crown in the UFC 205 main event on Nov. 12 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. UFC officials on Monday made the blockbuster matchup official.
Based out of the SBG Ireland camp, McGregor has blossomed into MMA’s brightest star. The 28-year-old has rattled off 16 wins across his past 17 outings, losing only to Nate Diaz in that span. McGregor avenged the defeat at UFC 202 on Aug. 20, when he took a majority decision from Diaz in one of the year’s best fights. He captured the UFC featherweight championship in December with his stunning 13-second knockout against Jose Aldo but has yet to defend it. McGregor will retain the 145-pound title through UFC 205, according to the UFC.
Alvarez, 32, will enter the cage on a three-fight winning streak. The Philadelphia native laid claim to lightweight gold at a UFC Fight Night event on July 7, when he stopped Rafael dos Anjos with punches in a little less than four minutes. Alvarez has gone 16-3 since he dropped to 155 pounds in 2008, with his only setbacks coming to Shinya Aoki, Michael Chandler and Donald Cerrone. His losses to Aoki and Chandler were later avenged.
