Conor McGregor Striking Coach Claims Nurmagomedov Fight is ‘Brewing Up Nicely’

If one of Conor McGregor’s coaches is to be believed, things are gradually progressing toward a showdown with UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

In a recent interview with MMANYtt, striking coach Owen Roddy said that the bout is “building,” but as always, the booking would come down to negotiations. McGregor hasn’t competed in combat sports of any kind since earning a reported $100 million for a boxing match against Floyd Mayweather last August. Roddy compared the buildup of the Mayweather fight to that of the current situation.

“I’m sure it’s just down to the right negotiations but yeah, I think it is building,” Roddy said. “This kind of started similarly with the Mayweather fight; there was talk, there was a bit of back and forth and a bit of drama and then once the crowd and once the fans get behind it, they ultimately create the fight. It’s brewing up nicely.”

Perhaps the biggest bit of drama occurred in April, when McGregor and his entourage attacked a charter bus carrying UFC fighters — including Nurmagomedov — two days before UFC 223. The “Notorious” one threw a dolly through a window of the bus, shattering glass and injuring Ray Borg and Michael Chiesa, both of whom were forced to pull out of the event.

McGregor was charged with three counts of assault and one count of criminal mischief for his part in the incident. He made his first appearance in court on June 14, and is scheduled for another date on July 26 as his legal team works to negotiate a plea deal.

Once that case is resolved, talks of McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov could conceivably move forward in earnest. McGregor hasn’t fought in the Octagon since claiming the lightweight belt with a victory over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in November 2016. He was stripped of the title due to inactivity earlier this year.

“Conor’s training hard, he’s always training. He’s motivated and he wants to fight, it’s just that he gets a few things sorted out and then he sits down and negotiates a good deal for his next fight. I think it will be another big spectacle like they always are. So I’m excited, just like everybody else,” Roddy said.

“I don’t know but I think [Khabib]’s at the forefront. I always say, Conor wants the biggest fights that he can possibly have and I think, at the moment, Khabib seems to be that guy.”
