Conor McGregor Gets Reduced Punishment for Bottle-Throwing Melee at UFC 202 Presser

The Nevada Athletic Commission may have mended its rocky relationship with Conor McGregor.

The NAC on Wednesday reached a settlement with the UFC lightweight champion, fining him $25,000 and sentencing him to 25 hours of community service for his role in a water bottle throwing incident at a UFC 202 pre-fight press conference last year.

McGregor was initially fined $75,000 and ordered to produce an anti-bullying public service announcement -- with a production value at a minimum of $75,000 -- by the NAC for his part in the melee with UFC 202 opponent Nate Diaz on Aug. 17, 2016. He was also ordered to perform 50 hours of community service. McGregor hurled water bottles and a Monster energy drink can at Nate Diaz after Diaz and his team left the dais early during a pre-fight press conference. A security guard was reportedly injured as both sides threw objects at each other.

After the initial sanction was imposed, McGregor vowed to never fight in Nevada again and implied that the commission would have difficulty collecting the fine. In December, the Irish fighter petitioned for a judicial review of the punishment in Clark County (Nev.) court. Last month, McGregor met with NAC Chairman Anthony Marnell and Executive Director Bob Bennett and was granted his request for a disciplinary rehearing.

McGregor earned a disclosed $3 million purse for his majority decision victory over Diaz at UFC 202. During Wednesday’s rehearing, Bennett noted that McGregor previously apologized for his actions at an earlier hearing and deemed the original fine take to be unfair.

McGregor is currently pursuing a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, and should the fight be booked, it would likely take place in Las Vegas. Once McGregor pays the fine, he can apply for a boxing license in Nevada. He has already received a boxing license in California.
