Colby Covington Sends Warning to Welterweight Division: ‘This is the Embarrassment Tour’

Perhaps the most confident fighter to emerge from UFC Fight Night 111 in Singapore on Saturday was rising welterweight talent Colby Covington.

The American Top Team representative was suffocating in his showdown with Dong Hyun Kim, landing eight takedowns and controlling virtually all the grappling exchanges with the South Korean judoka. The end result was a dominant unanimous decision win that included 30-25 and 30-26 scorecards from the cageside judges. The only other people to beat Kim in UFC competition: current champion Tyron Woodley, top contender Demian Maia and former interim titlist Carlos Condit.

“He hasn’t lost to anybody outside the Top 5. He’s lost to the champion, the No. 1 contender. No one’s dominated him like that,” Covington said. “I completely dismantled him. I beat him every second of every round. There’s some good things to take away from it, but I’m still improving. You haven’t seen the best Colby Covington yet.”

Covington’s grinding style doesn’t always make him a fan favorite, and there were some boos during his bout with Kim, but it is undeniably effective. During his current four-fight winning streak, Covington has landed 31 takedowns.

“I’m dominating these guys. I just dominated the No. 7 guy in the world. No one’s dominated him like this. This is officially the embarrassment tour,” Covington said. “I completely embarrassed him in Asia tonight, and I’m going to keep embarrassing the whole division. It doesn’t matter how I beat them. The way I’m beating them, this is easy money bro.”

It wasn’t all wrestling from Covington, however. The man known as “Chaos” also stunned Kim with an overhand left in the second stanza and followed up with a right hook and flying knee.

“It wasn’t just a wrestling performance. Look when I threw the hands,” Covington said. “He was wobbled; he was hurt. I felt the life go out of him after that. It was a really easy victory.”

Although Covington is still likely a few wins away from truly inserting himself into title contention, he already has experience with the reigning champion from their time at American Top Team together. According to Covington, those sessions weren’t all that different from his win over Kim on Saturday.

“I know Tyron Woodley got tired just watching this at home,” Covington said. “The last time I trained with him, it wasn’t even competitive. He gets tired just watching this. I’ll break him in half.”
