Garbrandt and Dillashaw were originally supposed to meet at UFC 213 in July, but “No Love” was forced to withdraw from the event after suffering a back injury. Dillashaw then began the initial stages of a cut to 125 pounds in hopes of a showdown with reigning flyweight king Demetrious Johnson. However, Johnson balked at the pairing, allowing Dillashaw to resume his focus on Garbrandt once again.
Garbrandt is unbeaten in 11 professional outings and captured bantamweight gold with a five-round verdict over Dominick Cruz at UFC 207 on Dec. 31. Dillashaw, the former 135-pound champ, has earned unanimous decision victories over John Lineker and Raphael Assuncao since relinquishing the strap to Cruz in January 2016.
