Christian M’Pumbu-Attila Vegh Light Heavyweight Title Fight Slated for Bellator 91

Bellator Fighting Championships 205-pound titleholder Christian M’Pumbu will risk his belt for the first time when he squares off against challenger Attila Vegh (Pictured) at Bellator 91.

The promotion Monday confirmed both the matchup and event, which is set to take place Feb. 28 at Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, N.M. The title fight will likely headline the card, which will be the seventh event of Bellator’s debut season on cable channel Spike.

M’Pumbu, 35, became Bellator’s inaugural 205-pound champ by punching his way through the company’s fourth-season light heavyweight tournament. The Congo-born fighter’s title win came in May 2011, when he stopped Rich Hale via third-round TKO at Bellator 45. M’Pumbu has not fought since October 2011, when he became the first Bellator champion to lose a non-title “super fight” by dropping a unanimous decision to Travis Wiuff.

Vegh is also familiar with the man who beat M’Pumbu: last August, the 27-year-old Slovakian needed just 25 seconds to knock out Wiuff. The capped a two-month Summer Series tournament run which also saw Vegh defeat Zelg Galesic and Emanuel Newton on the way to securing his title shot. The American Top Team representative holds a perfect 4-0 mark in Bellator’s circular cage.
