When Chris Weidman defends his UFC middleweight title against Vitor Belfort later this year, the fight will be joined by another high-profile Brazilian-American matchup.
UFC President Dana White confirmed Thursday during a media scrum that Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva will square off on the same show as Weidman’s upcoming defense. While no date has been confirmed for the pay-per-view, White said that the event will take place in the United States in either May or July.

Silva and Sonnen are currently serving as opposing coaches for “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3,” which will air this March on UFC Fight Pass. Sonnen’s ongoing feud with “The Axe Murderer” apparently boiled over during shooting, according to White, who confirmed that the men recently came to blows.
“I wasn’t shocked. That thing has been a time bomb since they got there. It’s without a doubt the worst thing that’s ever happened on ‘The Ultimate Fighter,’” said White. “It’s how bad they dislike each other. They were getting ready to do the weigh-ins. There were six cameras in there. We’ll see what happens when we go to editing. It’s crazy. People were punished.”
