Chad Griggs to Make Light Heavyweight Debut Against Phil Davis at UFC on Fox 4

Phil Davis will welcome Chad Griggs to the light heavyweight division on Aug. 4.

Promotion officials on Monday announced that both fighters have verbally agreed to square off at UFC on Fox 4, which will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The card is expected to be headlined by a middleweight clash between Brian Stann and Hector Lombard and also features a 205-pound scrap between Lyoto Machida and Ryan Bader. It is currently unclear whether the Davis-Griggs matchup will be part of the main card to air on Fox.

Davis, regarded as one of the top talents in the light heavyweight division, suffered the first loss of his career to Rashad Evans in January at UFC on Fox 2. The former All-American wrestler at Penn State University owns notable victories over Stann, Alexander Gustafsson, Tim Boetsch and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira during his UFC tenure.

Griggs rose to prominence in 2010, when he defeated former World Wrestling Entertainment star Bobby Lashley in his Strikeforce debut. The Arizona native continued to build momentum from there, finishing both Gian Villante and Valentijn Overeem inside of a round in 2011. “The Grave Digger’s” winning streak was halted by Travis Browne at UFC 145, as “Hapa” earned a submission victory via arm-triangle choke at the 2:29 mark of round one. Griggs, who checked in at 248 pounds prior to his bout with Browne, has never gone the distance in 13 professional fights.
