Carlos Condit Mangles Thiago Alves’ Nose, Forces Stoppage in UFC Fight Night Headliner

Carlos Condit made up for lost time.

In his first appearance in more than a year, the “Natural Born Killer” netted a second-round technical knockout against Thiago Alves in the UFC Fight Night “Condit vs. Alves” headliner on Saturday at the Goiania Arena in Goiania, Brazil. The cageside physician deemed Alves (21-10, 13-7 UFC) unfit to continue between rounds two and three, his nose having been mangled by a standing elbow strike.

Condit (30-8, 7-4 UFC) struggled to establish a rhythm in the first round, as he absorbed a number of heavy leg kicks from the Brazilian. Round two was a different story. The former World Extreme Cagefighting champion leveled Alves with an elbow to the nose in close quarters, and blood immediately began to leak. Condit pounced with punches and elbows, sensing the possibility of a finish. Alves returned to his feet, only to be brought to the mat by a body-lock takedown. Condit then fished for a rear-naked choke before bailing on the attempt in favor of more punishment. A disfigured Alves stumbled back to his corner, where he was met by the doctor’s decision and an end to his modest two-fight winning streak.

Oliveira Guillotine Finishes Lentz

The surging Charles Oliveira submitted American Top Team’s Nik Lentz with a third-round guillotine choke in the featherweight co-main event. Lentz (25-7-2, 9-4-1 UFC) conceded defeat 70 seconds into round three, as he tapped out for the first time in nearly nine years.

The two rivals did not disappoint. Oliveira (20-4, 8-4 UFC) walked through the American’s punches in a frenetic first frame -- it will go down as one of the very best rounds of the year -- and folded him with a crushing knee strike to the body. He assumed top position, passed the Lentz guard, landed another knee to the ribs and let loose with punches and elbows before achieving full mount.

Lentz bounced back with a strong round two, as he grounded the Macaco Gold Team standout, navigated the gifted Brazilian’s guard and kept the action where he wanted it. However, his good work came with a price. A weary and diminished Lentz emerged for the third round, and Oliveira capitalized. “Do Bronx” followed another knee to the body with a no-arm guillotine, as he jumped into full guard, rolled into a mounted position and forced the tapout.

Oliveira, 25, will carry a four-fight winning streak into his next appearance and seems poised to climb the ladder at 145 pounds.

Oliveira Choke Submits Noons

Alex Oliveira submitted former EliteXC champion K.J. Noons with a first-round rear-naked choke in a brief welterweight showcase. A replacement for the injured Yan Cabral, Oliveira (11-2-1, 1-1 UFC) drew the curtain 2:51 into round one.

Noons was effective with his hands -- he stood up the Brazilian with a right hook and wobbled him with a left -- but could not stay upright long enough to fully capitalize on his most trusted weapons. Oliveira transitioned to the back after the third of his three takedowns. Noons appeared to relax for a split second, leaving his neck open in a seated position.

The “Cowboy” took advantage, slipped in the choke and squeezed for the tapout.

Oliveira, 27, has rattled off four wins in his last five outings.

Barroso Clinch, Low Blow Unravels Jimmo

A suffocating clinch carried Nova Uniao representative Francimar Barroso to a unanimous decision over onetime Maximum Fighting Championship titleholder Ryan Jimmo in a featured matchup at 205 pounds. Barroso (17-4, 2-1 UFC) swept the scorecards with 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 marks from the judges.

Neither man did much offensively. Jimmo (19-5, 3-4 UFC) seemed content to pick his spots from the outside, though he was often reduced to single punches and kicks.

Barroso lured the Canadian karateka into the clinch over and over again, as he trapped him along the fence and drained time off the clock, much to the chagrin of those in attendance. The Brazilian also benefitted from a gruesome groin strike in the second round, where shin met cup and left Jimmo to writhe around on the canvas in pain before vomiting in a bucket.

The 33-year-old Jimmo has lost four of his past six fights.

Replacement Trinaldo Edges Parke

Former Jungle Fight champion Francisco Trinaldo won for the 11th time in 14 fights, as he edged Alliance MMA’s Norman Parke in a three-round lightweight showcase. All three cageside judges scored it 29-28, two of them giving the nod to Trinaldo (17-4, 7-3 UFC).

A replacement for the injured Gilbert Burns, Trinaldo leaned on his standup. The 36-year-old Brazilian was particularly effective in the second round, where he moved forward and tagged Parke with body-head combinations, looping overhand lefts and thudding leg kicks. “The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes” winner answered with a strong round three.

There, Parke (20-4-1, 4-2-1 UFC) executed a takedown inside the first minute, maneuvered to the back and hunted the crank and the choke. Trinaldo denied his advances and returned to his feet, erasing the potential for a finish.

Till Elbows Wreck Marques

Astra Fight Team prospect Darren Till wiped out Wendell de Oliveira Marques with a wicked volley of elbows on the ground in the second round of their featured battle at 170 pounds. A replacement for T.J. Waldburger, Till (13-0, 1-0 UFC) closed the deal 97 seconds into round two.

Marques (24-9, 0-2 UFC) never got out of the gate. Till stayed busy with his kicks through the first five minutes and then countered an attempted takedown from the Brazilian by advancing to top position early in the second round. The 22-year-old Brazil-based Brit set up shop in half guard and dropped a series of slashing elbows that knocked Marques unconscious.
