Brown Replaces Injured Kampmann, Faces ‘Doomsday’ on June 26

An unspecified injury suffered by Danish 170-pounder Martin Kampmann has shuffled a pair of welterweight bouts for the UFC’s June 26 debut in Pittsburgh.

With Kampmann unable to meet John Howard, the promotion announced late Monday that Matt Brown (Pictured) will step up to fight “Doomsday” on the Versus-televised main card of UFC Live 4. Brown’s original opponent, American Top Team fighter Rich Attonito, will now take on the Cesar-Gracie trained Daniel Roberts.

Brown, 30, will likely be fighting for his Octagon life against Howard, as the Ohioan currently sits mired in the worst slump of his five-year career. After beginning his UFC stint with an impressive 4-1 run, “The Immortal” was submitted during three consecutive starts in 2010, tapping out to Ricardo Almeida, Chris Lytle and, most recently, Brian Foster.

Howard also faces a must-win situation, having been bested in back-to-back bouts by welterweight contenders Thiago Alves and Jake Ellenberger. The 28-year-old Boston native previously had his hand raised in four straight UFC outings, eking out decision wins over Tamdan McCrory and Chris Wilson before scoring crushing knockouts of Dennis Hallman and Roberts.

After being handed his first career loss by Howard in his March 2010 UFC debut, Roberts ran off a trio of victories over Forrest Petz, Michael Guymon and Greg Soto. The “Ninja” had his streak halted April 30, when he was outpointed by Claude Patrick at UFC 129.

A quarterfinalist on the 11th season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Attonito drops to 170 pounds following a 2-1 run in the UFC middleweight division. Despite recording wins over regarded Brazilian Rafael Natal and “TUF 11” castmate Jamie Yager, it was a December decision loss to Dave Branch which spurred Attonito’s cut.

Headlined by another short-notice welterweight contest which will see Rick Story replace Anthony Johnson against Nate Marquardt, UFC Live 4 goes down June 26 at Pittsburgh’s Consol Energy Center.
