Recently released UFC middleweight Dave Branch and “Ultimate Fighter” Season 7 contestant Jeremy May will meet in the 185-pound co-main event of Shark Fights 15, the Texas-based promotion announced Monday.
Headlined by a welterweight matchup pitting UFC vet Chris Camozzi against former Strikeforce contender Joey Villasenor, the event takes place May 27 at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, N.M. Additional bouts and broadcast plans have yet to be announced.
Branch, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Renzo Gracie, began his career with six straight stoppages wins before being slammed unconscious by Gerald Harris in his July 2010 UFC debut. After bouncing back with a pair of unanimous decision wins against Tomasz Drwal and Rich Attonito, the 29-year-old “Tree” was cut down by a Rousimar Palhares heel hook on March 3 and subsequently waived by Zuffa.
May (Pictured) gained notoriety for his instigative stint on “TUF 7,” from which he was eliminated in the opening round by a Matt Brown knockout. The 25-year-old Californian has gone 4-1 in his last five outings, falling only to Pride veteran Murilo “Ninja” Rua during a July 2010 bout in Sydney. May returned to Australia to close the year and took a controversial November disqualification win over Aussie Ross Dallow, who allegedly applied an illegal substance pre-fight. Most recently, May finished fellow “TUF” alumnus Frank Lester on March 15 with a first-round rear-naked choke.
