Boxing: Tyson Fury Stays Undefeated, Likely Clears Way for Wladimir Klitschko Fight

It wasn’t pretty, but WBO International heavyweight champion Tyson Fury cleared another roadblock on his path to Wladimir Klitschko.

Utilizing a conservative boxing style, Fury on Saturday scored a lopsided stoppage of Christian Hammer (17-4, 10 KOs) at the O2 in North Greenwich, London. Their fighter outclassed and battered, Hammer’s corner threw in the towel following the eighth round.

“He was very tough; he took a lot of punishment,” said the six-foot-nine British heavyweight. “His corner knew he was in no shape to carry on. It was only a matter of time before he [was stopped].”

It was far from a barn-burner.

Fury, now 24-0 with 18 KOs, was patient throughout the contest. Jabs from a safe distance along with well-timed head and feet movement were the backbone of his eight-round conquest. It was a far cry from the Fury of a few years ago, who has been often criticized for a risky approach that has left his tall frame vulnerable to power shots. In the end, his game plan was more than enough to put the brakes on Hammer’s 10-fight winning streak and likely punch a ticket for a future date with Klitschko.

“I’m a much improved fighter. That’s why I’m No. 1 mandatory,” said Fury. “I’m ready for Klitschko.”

Klitschko (63-3, 53 KOs) must first get through Bryant Jennings (19-0, 10 KOs) on April 25. The pair will collide at Madison Square Garden in New York City in a HBO Boxing showdown.
